has anyone ever fitted power steering to one??

Many times, usually with large more modern day engine conversions. Vauxhall corsa steering column and pump and your laughing Few topics on it but thats what the search buttons for

However just man up and stay with non power steering

You can use an MGF steering column to convert a Mini to power steering although you'll also need all the wiring and command module for it.

Minis converted for disabled drivers by Motability were fitted with power steering. This was done using a small hydraulic servo fitted to the base of the standard steering column which had been cut shorter to allow it to fit. It can be done without altering the steering column if you can find the rack from a Mk2 Princess, which is more or less exactly the same as a Mini rack but is powered which makes it a little bulkier. There may be some adjustment of the panels around it needed to make it fit but it is essentially the same rack. Both systems have been used with the Princess pump fitted to the front of the engine, you can make brackets but I believe there is a different A series front plate from another model that will accept the pump. You'll have to go scrap yard diving to find these things.

Whilst Minis are easy to steer and park, not everyone is as fit and able as each other. And some people who fit massive wheels, change the geometry and change the steering wheel and rack do end up with a car that is very heavy to steer at low speed.

Hello,
I have fitted a Clio power rack to my clubby estate. I bought a metro based invalid car sometime back which had a power steering pump fitted to the engine.
After talking to the original manufacturers, they confirmed that it will run my small clio rack. A fair bit of messing and strenghtening of the bulkhead has been done to take it all, and the mini column and clio lower column have been mated together in my pals machine shop. The track rod ends have been machined down to take the longer mini ends. All the hoses have been worked out and a company in Glasgow are set to make them for me.There was a tad of cutting and welding to see the subframe go in, but this is now even stronger than original. The whole process has had safety, and quality as number one, and if I felt it was going astray the whole thing would have been scrapped. But its worked out very well, and when the car is put back together I will find out if it was worth the effort.
As to the question of why bother!! Well why not. We all do things to our mini`s, from wacky paint to pumping up the horsepower, I just fancied this.
The car is in the paintshop at the mo and I am looking forward to the rebuild.

ye but fat and unfit people have new cars. when have you ever seen a really unfit or fat person drive a classic? no one buys a classic and gets disapointed that there is no power steering. the one thing i really like about old cars is there is no power steering. feels like i'm doing all the work.

Would you like to explain to him that he shouldn't be allowed to drive one? Do you understand what Motability is? And incidentally I have seen many fat and unfit people in classic cars.

Exactly my missus is certianly not fat or unfit, but she has not driven the mini as she has weak wrists due to some form of arthuritus, and because of that is not really keen on it, Im sure if she could drive it would like it more. I would fit power steering if there was more simple to fit off the shelf kit, now I would imagine it be easier to use an electric motor type as they all seem to use them now!

ye if someone got a disability then thats fair enough, like someone else said on a post power steering was fitted for people with disabilities. but if someones fully abled and is just lazy and unfit then its their own problem. i'm aiming this at the lazy unfit people. if it came out the wrong way then i'm sorry. but hopefully this post will clear what i said up abit.
