Hi
I have stripped my 998 engine down and got the crank out, it does not seem to be in that bad condition.
I have read about people not regrinding there crank if it is alright condition can you do this?
Im thinking to get it reground anyway as it seems a thing not to miss in a engine rebuild.
Also how much should a crank regrind be?

Well the pic's aren't perfect but on the basis of what I can see I'd just reshell it and use it.

Run your finger nail across the journals and if it gets cought on anything the crank needs a regrind. If it seems good after that get some plastigauge and check the tolerences.
Its cheap to do.

I have already run my finger nail over all of the journals and it does not get caught on anything.
What is plastigauge?
Thanks Andy

They are clever gauges that when crushed in the journal will give an indication of the clearances.

Why dont you measure the journals and see if they are still in spec?

Easiest way to explain plastigauge.

Ignore the geek doing it and the fact that its a v8 in the vid the procedure is the same. Its cheap, really easy and gives a very good reading of the clearance.

A machine shop will no doubt do it for you quicker but I suppose I like doing things myself

It looks fine to me - if the journals were worn there would also be some scoring> Check with micrometer by all means but I would just reshell it.

I'd kind f go with bmcecosse, if it looks good it probably is. If you're really interested in doing a tip top job then it'd be best taking it to a machine shop. The journals can measure up with the thickness within tolerance but it won't tell you if they a perfectly round or parallel/congruent to the other journals. The only way to check that is to centre & turn the crank, with a dial gauge running on the journals.
