Hi Guys,
I have recently started to train for the Advanced Driving Test. The idea being that it will make me a safer driver on the Italian Job, or at least dodge those crazy Italian drivers.
Institute of Advanced Motorists Website
To become an advanced driver you join the Institute of advanced Motorists for £80 and then have a series of observed runs to improve your driving skills finishing in an advanced test.
The £80 covers your membership with the IAM, which includes all your observed runs and test.
The advanced observed runs:
These are 1-2 hour runs with an advanced driver where they will assess and comment on you driving skill.
It covers a wide range of driving conditions and techniques.
"The IAM Driving Assessment comprises:-
A short briefing,
A period of driving/riding by the member - assessed by the Examiner,
A further period of driving/riding by the member - with open discussion about it, (not instruction),
A full de-brief."
The advanced test:
"The Advanced Driving Test lasts for about 90 minutes and will usually cover between 30 and 40 miles along all types of road (town driving, motorways (if available) or dual carriageways, and even country lanes).
Your Examiner will hold a Police Advanced Driving certificate (either serving or ex Police Class 1) and will have extensive experience from working within the Traffic sections of the Police Force."
The benafits:
Apart from increasing you driving skill and safety, becoming an Advanced Driver can reduce you insurance (with some companies)!!!
I would recomend this to anyone who want to become a better and more importantly a safer driver! :smartass:

I had my initial assesment last Thursday. This involved 30 minutes of me driving my car with an observer and then 30 mins as a passenger in the observers car being shown how its done.
From the run I learnt the following:
1) I brake late and too harsh
2) I need to increase the smoothness of my control, both gear change and steering.
3) Stop indicating when it is not needed.
4) When driving in a 30 limit use 3rd gear as it provides more control and reduces the chance you will speed.
As you can see there is a fair amount I need to improve on, but there you are.

i was considering doing this as all members of my fathers side of the family have done it.
i was told these by my instructor when i first started driving, all sorted now.
Also with advance driving, when you drive around you have to anticipate more and tell the person beside you at the same time i.e. "I am staying in third gear and keeping at a steady speed in case the traffic lights change to red."
