Hi guys,

I have recently had my mini in to fix a head gasket problem and replace a couple of radiator hoses that were looking a bit worn, but I have noticeed that since taking her to the garage my rocker cover is leaking oil.

Does anyone know the best way for me to fix this? Do i need to replace the rocker cover, or can I just tighten/re-seal it somehow? Or is this a sign of a bigger problem inside my engine?

I am happy to fiddle around myself to see if I can fix it, but I am definately not a mechanic so dont really know what to look for. Any help you guys can give me would be really appreciated.

Thanks,
Miniature

Probably needs a new rocker cover gasket - the 'garage' should have fitted a new one when doing the head gasket. You can try nipping it down - but often this just distorts the cover and makes the situation even worse.......

I'm pretty sure i have a spare rocker cover gasket you could have for free :)

worse case is they may have overtightened the rocker cover and worped it, might have one of those spare too lol.

New gasket. Its a cork type gasket.
make sure you scrape off all the old one before replacing and dont ham-fist torque it down :P

Cheers for your help guys :) I will probably just replace the rocker cover AND gasket to be sure. They cost pretty much nothing so it would almost be silly not to. And thanks for the offer of a free gasket Karl, but I will let you keep that one for next time one of your minis needs it :P They cost soo little I would feel pretty checky pinching one off you. And I need to buy a few other bits on mini spares so I will just do a bulk buy and get everything sorted.

Thanks :)

You might not need a new rocker cover, plus I really don’t mind you pinching a gasket or two. I’ve got a draw full just from all the gasket kits I keep buying and only using half of.

Although one tip for you, if you place some random jelly based superglue blobs on the new gasket and then stick that to the rocker cover. You stand more chance of it staying in place while fitting and creating a better oil tight seal.

I will probably buy a new rocker cover anyway if nothing else just to make it look a bit nicer. I was having a quick look on mini spares and they sell "RTV Seal" which they advertise for sticking the gasket to the rocker cover. Should I get some of that or would any superglue work? I would have to get that RTV seal from somewhere else though as minispares has sold out which is a shame.

Well if you are sure you dont mind then yes I will take you up on the offer and grab one of those gaskets from you. If you PM me your address I will come and grab it after work at some point. Not particularily in a rush as I will have to wait for the rocker cover to turn up from minispares, but if you let me know when your free I will pop round and grab it.

Thanks :)

I’ve just run off down the garage to check and it appears I might have used my last rocker gasket (bloody memory, I must be getting old :( )

And I would use the rtv sealant, but as it’s only to hold the gasket in place long enough to get the rocker cover in place and tightened down, just some ordinary multi purpose uhu (jelly like superglue) adhesive will be fine. (available from Poundland for cheapskates like me lol)

Get a tube of hylomar and put a thin layer on the cover it does not set, RTV will give you problems removing it
