A quick google search shows that petrol is roughly 0.737kg/ but changes with temp and the grade of the fuel. a tank full therefor would weigh 3.35Kg

water does weigh 1kg/l but anything that has a different density will have a different weight, fluid is just a substance in a liquid form it could be anything from water to moltan steel... and the steel is gonna weigh a hell of a lot more then water!

You sure on this? I've always thought that 1 Litre of fluid (be it petrol or water) is equal to 1kg, and there are 4.54 litres to a gallon, thus making it 4.54kgs per gallon!

You're correct, 1 litre of water = approx 1 kg. However, petrol floats on water making it lighter, but thanks for bringing this to my attention as I think I may have done my calculations using a US gallon, and not a UK gallon. As a UK gallon is more than a US gallon, the weight of a UK gallon of petrol at 60 deg F should weigh approx 3.228 kg.

I've had a bit of a funny turn and actually weighed a litre of petrol, today it's about 65 degrees, and it seems Scubalegg is very close with 3.35Kgs per gallon, as I got 3.36Kgs.

Haha! Today I also thought I would physically weight 1 gallon (4.54 litres) of unleaded petrol, with the air temperature at 69 F (20 C), minus the weight of the container, it came out at 3.324 kg. This is assuming the pump reading the petrol came from is correct. My scales are accurate to + or - 1/2 gram. So it looks like we made it about the same weight So that makes it about 1.216 kg lighter than water per gallon

Its todo with the expansion of the fuel when its warms and vice versa. If you had 1L of petrol and it weighed 0.737kg at 60f and then heated it to 80f due to the expansion you would have more then a 1L but the same weight... if you the measured out 1L with the warm petrol it would weigh less.

Thats why its slightly more cheaper to fill your car at 4am in the winter then 3pm on a sunny afternoon, the petrol it colder so denser so you get of it per liter.

I did read somewhere that a car produces more power with colder air and fuel because you get more of it in due to it being denser

Hope that kinda explains why it weighs differently at different temps

On the inside of the door there is sound deadening this 400 g, the sound deadening on the floor of the mini is 10kg. amazed cause ive been weighing stuff aswell.

Made some aluminium spacer plates the weekend. So thought some of you guys with the early twin bolt front subframes might be interested to know the weight saving.

A pair of standard steel plates weigh 276g. The pair of aluminium plates I made from 6mm thick alloy are 96g. The standard steel spacers are approx 5.7mm thick, but I couldn't find any alloy this size.

6mm and then i just dropped them down a bit with a sanding disc, fitted them today went in fine. I have dropped 40+ kgs out of it so far.
