Hello all,

I'm at the stage of installing the chrome trim which goes around the front side windows as fitted to the mk1 cooper. My cooper is a 1961. I've got the chrome window trim which are original items but am a bit confused on how and what to use to fix them to the car.

In my mini cooper book it states I require either six trap head rivets and four clip rivets per window trim. I've found these fixings on somerford mini and the 5 fixings for the bottom chrome trim per window. My debate is the book states early coopers and standard deluxe and super deluxe models had 12 non-riveted clips which I can't find anywhere so will probable have to use the later type?

If any one that owns a classic mini with these items could you instruct me where roughly should the clips be fixed on the body?

Any help will be dearly appreciated (many thanks)

Sam

Minispares also do the pop rivet clips, there are 2 different sizes available depending on whether you have original trims or the later reproduced type.

I have not seen the early type clips for years, they had small bent tabs which slid into much larger holes drilled into the door frame.
I think the exact hole positions are detailed on either the 'Mini Cooper Register' forum or the 'Mk1 Performance' forum if you search or ask there.

have the original mk1 doors been reskinned or new doors and are they drilled....

this will help you .......but you will have to move the rivets on the lock side and top 1" further down and in on the top ....as this was trial and error for me.........

I never use those clips as they just provide more rust points. I glue those strips on with a clear RTV adhesive and the ones on my '64 'S' have been on since 1995 and are still fine.

I see that the Minispares items are out of stock. I daresay this is because the rivet heads are too small and don't always work properly. I ended up making my own fixing arrangements.

Sorry to revive such an old topic, but I was looking to fit a set of door trim to my '75 mini and wanted to check the position that I should fit the rivits? should they be central in the width of the upper frame? those in the photo look slightly outboard.

I have the same MS kit. The rivets sort of work but I found the actual trims weren't a good fit, they're actually too long in the top section. Try as I may, I couldn't get them to fit, so opted to cut them in centre and fit a S/S cover on join. Surely the original ones would have been a better idea. The Aus ones and probably others, actually clipped onto the frame itself, no clips. I would have loved that idea but they won't fit Rovers. Grrrrrr :-(

As I posted above, glue the strips on and avoid those rust-traps.

Im thinking glue might be the best option too especially if I would need to cut the trim. I take it you just start 1 end, clamp it there then work your way around? I will get back you with my experience.

I use a clear RTV adhesive. I squirt it all the way along the channel in the back face of the trim. Then I get a ball of string and wind it round the trim & window frame which keeps the trim close to the frame and also keeps it central.

After 24 hours remove the string and trim off any excess RTV with a plastic knife.

It then does not let any water between strip & frame, there are no attachments to rust and it lasts forever.

Thread revival...

The upper trim is attached by rivets but how does the mk1 lower door trim fit? Does it clip on much the same as on mk3 doors?

I have the separate clips and have now figured out how the attach to the trim.

But before I press it all home and scratch the new paint I want to make sure I've got it right.
