I would not put myself in the same bracket a JKD, who I would agree, in their day were the bees-knees... but when it comes round to gearsets there are a number of suppliers and manufacturers out there which are providing much superior products than JKD ever did, IMO.

I wouldn't say ever did, I would say that some of the gears I have seen recently appear to be good because the have used inferior metal grades and over hardened to compensate, just waiting to shatter, and th eother end of the spectrum are softer than chocolate left in a car on a hot summers day.

I hope there is someone out there creating gears that are A) made from the correct steels and 2) correctly hardened.

mbe s box is a quality item, he uses the same material as they use in f1 boxes.
the one in my car performs very well indeed. great ratio s and a quick slick change.

but saying that i used a 4 speed jkd dogbox for years with no major issues.

if any one is desperate for a jkd dogbox i can still lay may hands on them, but like guess works says, why when there are boxes out there that are better with parts readily available.

Just to let everyone know that my problem was solved. Apparently there are more than one one type of clutch pedals on the Mk3 Coopers, my mechanic showed me another one compared to mine and it was just under an inch higher than mine. Pedal replaced and hey presto gears engage like a hot knife through butter and noise is gone too. If anyone comes across this problem please check if your pedal is giving enough 'throw/travel' to the master cylnder first.

Thank you all for your comments and assistance.
