Don't know if anyone came across this problem but here goes. I have a full Jack Knight gearbox on a Cooper S Mk3 and recently found that when I start the car and go on reverse the gears don't go in. If I switch off the engine all gears engage fine. When I try to select a gear with the engine started I hear this high pitched sound and am too afraid of forcing a gear as I don't want to damage anything.

I usually switch off the engine, put it in reverse and start up. Do a bit of reversing and the gears go back to normal as if nothing happened. My mechanic hasn't a clue as to what it could be.

Has anybody encountered this problem?. It seems to happen occasionally when I select reverse from a cold start.

Thanks in advance.

Your clutch is dragging, bleed the clutch and the problem should disappear, if not then it's probably time for a clutch overhaul.

Luckily for you this is 99% a clutch problem, because sourcing parts for a jack knight gearbox is not so easy at the moment!

Indeed... we recently had a JKD 5-speed box overhauled. It took 10 months to source the bits...

Are jack knight still running? I have tried to go on their site to see how much a gear box is to compare with other companies and all it says is "the shop will be back soon"

Phewwwww.......thank you all for setting my mind at rest as I thought I'd have to take the gearbox apart again a second time. The JK gearbox was fitted on a 1380 Mini I had last year but when I found this Mk3 S I decided to keep the gearbox and have it fitted on my new purchase, as I also know how difficult to find and expensive they are, plus I just love the noise it makes :). During fitting to my S engine my mechanic stripped the JK gearbox out to see if there was anything that needed changing but found everything right so all it required were new gaskets.

However, I remember him fitting a used clutch master cylinder and as you guys remarked it's possible that it requires a bit more bleeding. What a relief i must say. Thank you all once again.

There not the 'same' jack knight of old... They own the name but... Best you all read this thread fron the begining and make your own minds up.
The very last post is the most important IMO.

well just read that whole post, and i have to say i think it would be safe to say they are no longer operating. Thanks for the link Ruckus. I wonder if you can order gear kits direct from the last poster?
