how could i tell (without removing my current heater hose) what size my heater hose is?

i can't tell off the year of the car because its had an engine change...

all i could tell you is its a 1275 A+ and it dosnt have the sandwich plate (that is of course if by sandwhich plate they mean a plate between the thermo housing and the block.... right?).

Any ideas anyone?

thanks,
Dan

I know you've said not to remove the heater hose....but it's the highest point in the cooling system. I'd take it off, place it against some card, draw round it and measure the diameter with a ruler. Measure the thinckess of the tube and you have the internal diameter.

That being said it's probably. 5/8 internal diameter / bore. If you are replacing it then buy a silicon one - it's worth it, mine was leaking just 4 hours ago as it was perished!

ive seen the silicone kits on mini spares, they look great, especially at that price! i dont have much money to spend on it at the moment though so for a temporary measure im going to buy a few metres of the hose off ebay to get me by until after christmas.

Ive done a bit of reading up on these hoses and from what ive read im leaning towards the 5/8" aswell, although not 100%. Well, ill find out when i come to fit it i suppose lol

Hi,

Just take it off an check - you wont loose a lot of coolant - but a cup underneath to catch the water...

Charlie

p.s. grease up the hose after (not much) so it comes off easier next time

The later minis use 5/8".

If it has the control valve on the driver's side of the head it'll be 1/2".

As above if the valve is on the head, 1/2". If the valve is loose and just held by the pipes 5/8". Most pipes have the size written on them, try cleaning a section up with some parafin.

If in doubt you could always fit 13mm silicon heater hose instead. It's virtually the same diameter as 1/2" heater hose, but being made of silicon it can easily be stretched to fit over the larger 5/8" unions and outlets. It's also harder wearing and longer lasting than the original rubber type hose too (and if you don't fancy the usual bright blue or red colours, it's also available in black so that know one would know the difference at a glance)

The Mini was changed to 5/8" heater hose largely to increase cooling system capacity, it's best to stick to the larger bore really.
