As above....Ive stripped my subframes bare and now Im going to get them blasted. My question is whats best to get them coated with? Paint (Im thinking spray Hammerite) or powdercoated?

The car wont be getting used over winter etc so just a summer car. Ideally I wont be using it on too many wet roads either unless Im headed to a show.

From my research paints good as you can touch it up easily but powdercoat looks awesome but can get chipped and then flake off in massive sections in no time.

I dont want to be continually stripping the frames and getting them redone so, from your experience, what do you find to be the best?

Personally I've never seen anything that's been powder coated suffer the chipping and flaking you describe and would happily have a set of frames coated.

That said the frames for my estate will probably get spayed in 2K paint as we we can do it in house with a shorter turn around time.

Well id say powdercoat all the way, i have never seen it chipping and flaking like i have read also, and when you think could you get the cleaned up as well as shotblasting will and can you get the paint into all the nooks and crannies like powdercoat can, and persoanlly i have always found powdercoat to be much tougher than paint

and it looks good in red to

why not bother with powder coating?

any real life experiences?

I was going to go with POR15 but then decided to go with powdercoating - easier and cheaper (sand blaster people organise it all!)

have seen powder coat chip, once it does it sucks water in like mad. it doesn't happen all of the time, but 90% of stuff i've seen that's been coated it's chipped and peeled.
i've had stuff done that's blistered before it's even been used!!
there are either some awful coaters or powders out there ;)

Well the powdercoaters I would be taking it to do stuff for offshore installations in the North Sea. And they dabble in wheel coating and parts  Might be worth a discussion with them as Im not sure.

Powdercoat is much more durable then regular paint, which is why most of a transmission pans and trans axels are powedercoated from the factory. However a good base coat and rubberguard will go a long way. I don't think you'll get a 10 yr guarantee for any paint job, if you do run with it, especially an undercoat.
