me and me mums other half bought this a little while ago, as a project to do and sell and make some nougats on.

its a 1980 Reliant Scimitar GTE se6, which has a 3.0l v6 ford essex engine (same as ford granada), automatic transmission, electric windows, and all that usual stuff for this year of car.

we bought it from the guy that sold the ferrari to mike on wheeler dealers, the guy that sold it to us runs a buisness in london in which he hire out classic cars.

anyway, it was advertised as non running, due to a broken distributor driveshaft, which was not true, as we found out, lol.

here she is, this was when we first got her.

as you can see, she looks quite respectable on the outside, normally due to the bodies being fibreglass, their full of cracks and crazing etc, but this one isnt, and is still in its original colour, paprika. As can be seen, the seats need a retrim, and it needs new carpets, these are on order at the moment.

anyway, decided to start this project by looking at the engine first, so pulled the rocker covers off, to have a look in there, to discover a broken rocker, lol.

then turnt the crankshaft, and noticed the rockers werent moving, meaning the camshaft wasnt spinning, the ford v6 essex engine, has a plastic, yes PLASTIC, camshaft drive gear, which as you can guess has a habbit of failing,

so i thought it a good idea to remove the heads and see if there was anything to worry about inside the engine

Posted Image

the only thing i found suspicious, was it looks like one of the valves has kissed a piston, i dont think its enough to worry about, ill change that valve, just to be on the safe side though.

needs a good decoking session in there, lol

so next i removed the timing cover to access the timing gears, and found this, looks like the timing gears kind of exploded, lol

and heres some of the plastic teeth i found in the bottom of the timing cover, lol.

thats all for now, next update soon.

This is a right time warp for me, my dad owned quite a few of these

The only thing missing for my trip down memory lane is the old cartridge player ...great cars!

My dad once hit a sheep on a duel carriageway doing 50+ in one of his....dust pan and brush time :D

But no rust weheyyyyyyy!!!!

I like it! Took one apart in a day once, it was full of mice. I'd change all the valves if I were you, just to be on the safe side..

They are fibre on the Essex - it's to keep the noise down. I fitted an all steel one to my Scimitar when I built the engine to avoid a repeat of your problem. to be honest I was hard pressed to tell the difference in noise level so for peace of mind and fit and forget I'd do it again.

Was just saying to a guy at the Mini club last night that I wish I still had it and if I saw it come up for sale I'd buy it back and then worry about where to put it. Mine was an SE6 too but manual with overdrive. It was white with a black interior (a very unusual combination it would seem) and didn't have a sunroof.

Very tidy looking, tidier than mine! :) I have an SE5 and love driving it, hard to beat the Essex in the audio department. Looks like yours has been upgraded with tubular manifolds and a rewpot too. Hope you get this one back on the road!

Thanks, I wasn't sure wether the manifolds were modified, I've also discovered it's got a full stainless steel exhaust system and Koni suspension. Can I be daft and ask what a rewpot is?

Its the pot shaped thing on top of the thermostat housing, that the radiator filler cap screws into. I think I've got the name right at least :) Not 100% on the intent, think its to provide additional expansion space for the water to warm up so you don't get overheating issues (which Scimitars have a bit of a rep for if the cooling system isn't in good order!).

Yeah, not keen on the colour scheme, but as I'm doing it to sell, we've got to really keep it original, we've ordered some new seat covers and a full carpet set for it though.
