Does anyone know if you can remove the gear change mechanism from the top of the gearbox without problems as it would make it easier to modify the connection pegs to attach the cable rose joints.to?
Thanks Greg

Why do you want to remove the connection pegs?
If it is because the horizontal fitting is a major pain in the ar5e to get a nut on the bottom of then I can suggest a fix. Use an M6 rivnut in the hole of the connection peg and then wind a nut onto the stud of the rose joint. When you connect the rose joint stud into the rivnut of the connection peg lock it off with the nut that you had previously wound onto the stud of the rose joint.

Greg, here is what I mean in the photo below, I cant show it with the cable connected as you will notice that the gearbox isnt currently in the car.

Actually I was only really thinking about difficult access to drill out rather than problems with nut fitment and possibly more with the vertical arm than the horizontal one. I was thinking about just cutting threads in the holes and I could then use a nut to lock on top or if I could take the mechanism off then I could put a set screw through from underneath. Given restricted access I was worried about being able to drill the holes accurately.
Rivnut is an interesting idea and maybe easier than cutting a thread though isn't the metal a bit thick? My worry with rivnuts is that you start with a bigger hole so if you have problems you have no options.
Thanks Greg

Thanks
As you said if lifts straight out once you have undone the cap bolt on the side and much easier to work on with it off the engine though had some problems drilling as material was quite hard - muist get some new drill bits!
