Doing our John o Groats to Lands end trip in my standard 998 fully laden with camping gear etc we averaged between 45-60mpg the whole way. Not bad really seeing as we took a lot of fund B Roads along the way :D

Are all classic mini's fuel tanks the same size ?

No. Originally Minis had a 5.5 gallon tank. A 7.5 gallon tank became standard in 1980. Cooper Ses had twin 5.5 gallon tanks from 1966 onwards.

Here are a few official Government mpg figures for late model Minis that you may find useful:

1980 Mini 850cc
Urban: 39.3
56mph: 48.7
75mph: N/A

1988 Mayfair/City 998cc
Urban: 46.1
56mph: 60.5
75mph: 40.7

1990-96 1275cc SPi Cooper
Urban: 36.6
56mph: 48.9
75mph: 33.6

1996 on 1275cc MPi Mini and Cooper
Urban: 33.4
Extra Urban: 51.8
Combined: 43.0

The 1.0L high compression specced mini will give around 45mpg.But, it all depends how heavy your right foot is.

I took my 1977 mini 1000 out a run tonight over to Fife and back and remembered this thread so I decided to see what mpg I would get out of the car. I filled him up to the neck then started my run. After 41 miles I filled it up again and done my conversion. 4.92 litres used which equates to 37.88 MPG. I suppose that's an OK'ish return but could be improved with a tune up!

I seem to average around 35mpg driving like I usually do (with a lead foot), but can get around 45mpg if I drive sensibly. I did that once and it was boring, so I generally accelerate unnecessarily quickly wherever I go, I'm happy with 35mpg and plenty of smiles per gallon :D That's a bit of a mix of all types of roads though, I do get better consumption on motorway journeys, as would be expected really. :P

I've got a 998 with a stage 1 kit, which consists of a performance air filter, inlet manifold, exhaust system, and a new carb needle. Do a bit of searching and reading on this wonderful forum and you'll soon know the basics of what we're all on about when talking about engines and such

All I know is I have a 1275 engine and it costs me £20 to fill her up and that seems to last for like a month! My Dad has an EOS and he said to fill that up is £70...my mum's Bini is £40 I think...

Mpi for a 38 mile round commute of country lanes & trafficky A roads:

38 x 5 = 190 miles

I stick 22 litres in her a week.

So that's 22L x 0.22 = 4.84 gallons

190/4.84 = 39.25 mpg.

Hmmm. Not as good as I thought  . Must be all the jams at roadworks.....

Eh?? Most 1275's have a 7.5 gallon tank (approx 34 litres) and with today's pump prices it costs more like £45 to fill one of those up!! So either you have yourself a very small non standard fuel tank (about 14 litres??), or you have managed to find somewhere that's selling fuel at under 60p per litre!! (in which case please do share the details!! ;D) The chances are though, that you are filling your tank up when it's actually still over half full. It's very common for the classic mini fuel gauge to read empty when it's actually still half full and it's usually a dodgy fuel sender unit that's the culprit.

Standard 998 with an annual rolling road tuning:
"kids in the back" driving I can get about 38mpg.
Fangio style "my car eats roundabouts" style driving I get about 25.
