D16 series engines are easier on the wallet, SOHC but very usable power, about 130hp or so, getting a DOHC (B series) is all well but depending on your wheel setup you might find you got short gears, with the D series you got more choices or gearboxes aswell, plus being a SOHC fitting it into a standard roundnose is a bit less headache, still a headache but less of one
I can't remember of the top of my head the actual engine code of the popular choice D's as I'm only clued up on B's, but have a search through the build diaries here

The D16 A9 engine, a non VTEC twin cam, was rated by Honda as 130bhp, I think you will find the single cam versions produced less power. D16 A9 engines are available for about £100 plus gearbox. Then you have to fit them.

No VTEC no boom boom!
Boom boom being much happiness and silly noises from you and the car after 5000rpm through to 8250rpm
I'm sure the d16a9 is a good engine with good power but lets face it, if your gonna go though the hassle of shoehorning a honda lump in a mini then at least make sure your engine is making silly noises from 5 to 8k, its the way honda intended........sorry mini intended

a D16Z6 is a very good reliable motor, half the price a B.
the D15B is also good but harder to find.
the big advantage with a B is the amount of stock LSD boxes kicking about.
The D16Z6 and D16Y7/8 have closest stock gearing and ive never had an issue in my civic running 15's with 280hp but if you find them to close then the D14A2 box would probally be a good alternative.
