ive recently bought a m reg cooper 1.3 spi and its got a few problems and have been forwarded to this topic.
from a cold start i normally have problems with the idle from cold - it drops to 500rpm when i switch lights on and use heater.
on the flip side - after doing 50mph on the way to work the cars revs will stay at 2000rpm and wont come back down when i come to a stop at traffic lights.
turning off engine and restarting wont help matters.
after about half hour of engine running the revs finally come down
someone has advised me the stepper motor could be sticking ?
any ideas
cheers

Hi,
Could be sticking throttle cable...
Take it for a drive so that the revs do sit high, use your toes to pull the throttle pedal up and see if the revs drop down.
If they do drop to what you expect then its the cable, and your best off just replacing it.
Hope this helps...

I've got a '92 SPI cooper. When the engines cold, it refuses to start (could turn over for 20-30 seconds ish without starting) and will cut out easily if not revved. If you give it a dart of easy start it will start up quickly. When you've been driving for a few minutes it will start straight away.
I suspected the coolant temp sensor but Sprocket said this would result in constant choking on page 1. The temp gauge in the car never gets above blue.
Anyone know what's wrong?
Thanks,
Josh
Edit: Fixed, wires to coolant temp sensor had chafed through

Sprocket Please PLEASE replace the pics on the first page, it would help me and others I am sure SO much.
Thanks!!!
Hey Sprocket: I second that appeal to post the original images at the start of this thread. You did an amazing job explaining all different parts and situations. The photos will bring it all together.

Never worked on an SPI and none of the hoses or electrical wires were connected, except the flywheel sensor, and the car still fired right up and ran well enough to get around temporarily. I've read in the Rover MEMs doc that the ECU goes into Limp Home Mode when only the flywheel sensor is operable. They're right. Pretty smart box for its age.

hey sprocket, my 1275 cc SPI is stalling at low RPMs and does not idel. Any idea what it could be?
I have same problem as this. Nearly all of the time (more often when engine is warm) engine won't idle and just dies. It then takes a few tries for the engine to start.
Runs as expected other than that.
I assume from the first couple of pages that it's not easy to just pick the idle speed up a bit (mine is ok if I keep the revs above 1500 rpm).
Cheers!

Thanks for your guide Sprocket, I printed it out and had it in the garage with me. Would have been there ages if I didn't have it.
