ive had a very good look at one of the 4wd carpis very recently, as another race team has had it in for a bit of work. theyre serious bits of kit, essex V6, custom bell housing on a borg worner gearbox, then an adapter housing on to a massy fergusson transfer cage, then up through a diddy prop to a diff thats been built into the sump pan, which was also custom made out of some thick alloy! mega bits of kit..!

Well folks, an old chap who lives opposite me designed and built the first four wheel steer mini used for rallycross, he is in his eighties now but is still a mine of information.
He is also an artist who owns a small gallery in the Lake District and paints under the name " Lafanky ", if you google this he tells you all about his life with engineering and motorsport, its really good .

4x4 Rallycross Mini in action.........anyone got a video of the original TV footage?
No video recorders in those days, well not in private hands. TV footage must be in "world of sport", iirc Kieth Ripps accident might be the same day

The rear diff was supposedly a spitfire/ herald item.
Hmmm,, I don't think it was one of them. There were a big heavy cast steel affair
I suspect you are thinking of the back end of the Quadra Moke that used Truimph Spitfire Rear Suspension?
Looking at the photos, the mini would appear to have 1100/1300 front hubs. Observe the front camber and ride height which looks completely wrong.
A bit like this? (also from the Quadra Moke, but now put right)
Yes, it was an abortion to say the least. It handled diabolically with that set up. Now with the front end almost right and the Triumph (in engeering stupidity) rear end, it has improved considerably and only handles bad now.
