has anyone had any experience welding with just co2? I hear argon mix is the best way to go but i've also heard co2 on its own. Any advice? Cheers

Co2 works ok on its own, but the weld seems to come out nicer and stonger with argon mix i have found.
EDIT: also i found there seem to be a little more splutter with CO2.

In my experience pure co2 seems to cause more splatter than argon mix is a viable alternative.

I prefer pure co2 then an argon mix. I assume you mean mild steel mig welding?

yeah mild steel mig welding. Some people say that the welds are weaker and others say they are just as strong just a more untidy weld.

not sure about the strength but co2 makes a lot more spatter. Also the welds tend to be higher!

From what I've read the welds are normally higher with co2 because it cools the weld pool more than argon mix meaning the penetration isn't as good. When I was welding with co2 I just wound the temperature up a little more than I would for argon mix until I got a level of penetration I was happy with.

Just one for the road, penetration. :teehee:

It really depends where you get the gas from. Pub gas often has moisture in the cylinder which comes out when your welding.

IMO argoshield light is ideal for pretty much for everything on a car

It makes sense, all in line with global warming etc etc

I also find pure argon is quite sputtery!

i always weld with just C02. I find my penetration is good enough. ;D alot of the time i can feel the weld on the other side too. so going all the way through, but not making a hole.

Using co2 creates a hotter weld which can result in quite a bit of warping if your not carefull, i can let you have an empty co2 bottle and give you the number of a guy in brighouse who can exchange it for you, and fire extinguisher companys won't fill a pub bottle as it is illegal and carries something like a 20 grand fine if caught.
If your interested in a bottle drop me a pm.

I started with just CO2 & my welds were ok but since changing to CO2/Argon (5%) mix from Adams gas I find welding easier & less messy.
