I had this mini with parts missing and have since bought all the parts and fitted them.
This included a new headgasket and i am almost certain the timing is correct.
It turns over but will not 'fire'...i have fitted new spark plugs and leads but it will not start.

I am now thinking it is something to do with the coil/distributor...this is the setup i have:

Looks like a handy tool..if the carb isnt set up properly will it stop it starting or will it start and just run crap or not start at all?
Youll have to bare with me..im new to minis, im 17 so it will be my first car.

Thanks for the advice..i will start with a new battery, trying to get it running before the crap weather sets in lol

your coils wired wrong.

That white/brown doesn't go to the coil it goes to the oil pressure switch

look at bottom of picture I can see a white/yellow, I suspect theres a white/pink attached to it also, that plugs onto the coil positive.

The white/blacks go to coil negative

Also after you fitted the head gasket did you reset the valve clearances,

BUT in this instance its your coil wiring which is the main problem

If that's a pink/white wire, make sure the coil is a 9 Volt one.

On an 85 it should be a ballasted system, I can see the white/yellow in the bottom picture so it should have the white/pink in fact think I can just make it out under the white/yellow

Okay..thank you all for the input.

The white/pink and white/yellow do not have connectors and appear to loop into another loom...ill upload pictures right now to show you what i have to work with

Thanks.

show the coil as well, we need to know if its ballast or non ballast. It should be ballast on that year, but a lot get modified.

The white/pink and white/yellow are the original coil wires, if they are taped back you may have a modified ignition system. In which case there will be another wire going to the coil positive.

BUT that white/brown shouldn't be the one, that should be the oil pressure sender wire.

those pictures aren't really clear enough, your first lot were great.

I wouldn't like to call it based on those.

Black wires are normally earths, but it may be one somebody as fitted themselves so it could be anything.

The white/yellow white/pink is that the end of the wire to left of picture with no spade connection on it. If so fit a spade connection to it and plug it into coil positive.

This is assuming the coil is ballasted.

Sorry mate..would help if my phone had a flash lol

The white/pink, white/yellow are soldered to a wire..which i can only assume is to do with the immobilser?

And as far as i can tell the black wire seems to be their replacement...

Is there any way of telling whether the system is ballasted still?

If it was mine

I'd swap the coil for a non ballast 12v coil.
Run a wire from the white wires on the fuse box to the positive terminal on the coil
The white/black wires connect to the negative on the coil

Wrap some tape around the soldered mess and ignore it :)

The above will convert your mini to non ballast.

I'm assuming the immobiliser only stops it starting , does the starter spin ???

You could really do with a multimeter to test some of the wires. I suspect if the black is an addition then it could come from the immobiliser

I'm guessing original coil wires soldered to a feed to the immobiliser and the black wire is the feed out of immobiliser that goes to coil positive.
But you'd need a multimeter to test voltages etc

The immobiliser works..the engine spins..im just getting no spark.

The above sounds like a good idea lol

Thanks.
