ok unless its been messed with its a ballasted ignition system so you need a ballasted coil

Look for a white/yellow wire this goes to the positive on the coil you should also have a white/pink wire this also goes to the positive on the coil. You may find that both these wires share a spade connection anyway and are joined.

There should also be a white/black wire this goes to the negative on the coil. down near the dizzy should also be a white/black which joins onto the wire coming out of the dizzy.

Is there only supposed to be 3 connections on the coil? I know for sure the one i have has 4 connections? :)

For info, look at bottom right side of page 12.36 on the link below. This shows 4 connections, the 3 identified above plus a second White/Black which feeds the tacho. This suggests that you have the multiple instrument pack not the single one shown on the previous page.

If you have the white/yellow then you should have the white/pink .

1985 will be ballasted as standard but a lot do get converted. So it may be taped back into the loom or even cut off.

Sorry guys, I must have been having a senile moment. Here is the link:

http://www.ilovemini.../haynesmini.pdf

If you measure the resistance (with meter) across the + & - terminals (with cables disconnected), you should get the following results:

Non-balasted coil 3.0-3.4 Ohms
Balasted coil 1.2-1.5 Ohms

The following is an extract from the Haynes manual:

Primary resistance at 20ºC:
Lucas LA12 and 15C6 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.2 to 3.4 ohms
Lucas HA12 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 3.0 to 3.4 ohms
AC Delco 9977230 or Ducellier 520035A . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.2 to 1.5 ohms
GCL 144 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.3 to 1.5 ohms
GCL 143 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 0.70 to 0.86 ohms
Ballast resistance:
AC Delco 9977230 or Ducellier 520035A . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.3 to 1.5 ohms
GCL 144 . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 1.5 ohms

Hope this helps.
