If you look at the 90's italian job minis which were supposed to replicate (kind of :- ) the original ones they basically used the 'cooper' stripes and made them black and job done - leather straps recreated, they aint even in the center lines of the bonnet like the original straps they are on the edges

Its just alot of people associate the two stripes thinking they are the old straps that were found once on the coopers, I can't see Rover in the 1990's producing cars with actual leather straps on them - hence the pedestrian friendly vibe so they opted for two vinyl stripes, do they know as Cooperman said the origins were from actual historic racing events and recognising different competitor cars? who knows, its was Rover afterall and they just want to sell cars.....

BMW paid an absolute fortune for the rights to the Mini brand, so in commercial terms they have every right to use it as they please. It must be remembered that BMW bought a load of c**p when they bought Rover and inherited real problems which could have destroyed them.
True, the BINI is not a 'real' Mini to us, but it is a brand name owned by them in the same way as the Chinese own the MG brand and TATA Industries own Jaguar and LR. If you own something you can do as you please with it as it's bought & paid for.

haha i am not getting into a debate about who has the rights to do what and who owns what. i'm just putting my view over. i think its a shame, everything gets milked to death, but then again i suppose the stripes lost all meaning as soon as they were used outside of a rally, or instead of bonnet straps.

To be fair to BMW they did make some BINI 'coopers' with a single bonnet stripe, but was it to one side like on the originals to replicate the driver in competition like the yesteryears? No, it was smack bang in the center and worse on some as it carried over onto the roof and down the back!

Hello halfords, do you mind if I do a smash n grab drive thru your ripseed chav area as my mini needs some cooper lovin

I'm not trying to take this off topic and start a flame thread here as I don't hate BMW, I used to own one, but I love the classic mini and I've experienced my legs being crushed sitting in the back of Bini and a classic mini was more comfortable whether your in the front or back!

Long live the mini, the proper one.......

Well at least theres a good outcome bonnet stripes look amazing on the coopers but just look wrong on other minis

I don't dislike the BMW MINI but I do wonder why others have a bit of a downer on it?
The Metro was made to replace the mini and fair enough it didn't last long compared to the mini but it was accepted.
The BMW MINI was designed and built by Rover
BMW bought rover knowing they had a good product waiting to be launched
And when they did run with it with all the fan fair and advertising obviously never mention that it was ready to launch before they took control.
So just wondering why others are against it when technically if rover had stayed in business it would have been the new British Mini.

A Mini is a Mini at the end of the day whether it has stripes on or not. I like the whole white stripes white roof look; just because I haven't got a Cooper isn't going to stop me from putting them on.

That doesn't mean people will automatically like it, there is loads of topics on this, actually there probably locked aswell as they get out of hand, that alone should answer your question........

As I said I don't hate the BINI but I bought a mini as I learnt to drive in one and although its a small car its huge fun to drive and be in and around one and others share the same view hence the massive following since the year dot, it doesn't matter who made the BINI whether it be Bmw Ferrari or Toyota, I've driven one and sat in the back of another, I couldn't honestly tell you if I was in a BINI or Fiat punto or Vauxhall corsa, its just another bland modern car with the same absolute no character whatsoever that most modern cars have, I drive a modern car aswell so I'm aware of the pure numbness associated with driving one, whereas I can tell I'm in a mini because I actually smile when around them and people here that know me know I hardly smile :-

If your trying to change the views that ALOT of people have of the BINI/Mini malarky then good luck with that and let us know how you get on.....

I'm sure the mods are watching this topic aswell, the original question has been answered but unfortunately mention the B word and.....

And they knew what they were doing when they bought Rover. They worked with them for years before they actually bought the Rover group as a whole. It's a shame that we don't really have a lot left... Rovers were great cars.

Mine hasn't broken down once!... honest :shy:

33 EJB once sported a set of bonnet stripes whilst circuit racing
