Hi all, just a small update from the weekend. Didn't get any work done the weekend before, but got this done last Sunday. I'd just like to thank Deathrow and any other guys who contributed to getting the forum back up and running. Great work guys, was lost without it!

Thanks deebo, it certainly is becoming a solid shell now. Brams96, thanks, I can actually get to most of the repairs on the back of the pillars to tidy up, but will apply some seam sealer and some paint here anyway. Thanks Vindam, I have been close to giving up on the gutters but can almost see the finish line now so not much more to do!

So, Sunday I got all of the welds on the passengers side gutter finished and then started the big grind down! About 5 hours work here and this is the end result.

Inside of the gutter ground down, with a 6mm grinding disc on my home made spindle in the drill, at a very very slow speed. Then finished off the inside of the curve on the lip with a 2mm cutting disc on the spindle and drill.

And the under side with a 40 grit then a 100 grit flap disc.

Thats the passengers side done. Got a bit at the front and a really hard curved bit to sort out at the back next and then roof!

Thanks.

Scott you are doing absolutely amazingly I've been following this topic since it started, and i gotta say you have amazing patience, by now i would have ended up selling it as a 'Project' the only other 1980 mini that was restored that i have REALLY looked into is this one:

That was rebuilt at great expense, to look like this:

But i'm sure yours will be much better and i eagerly wait to see your finished car and the continuing restoration :D

Thanks Minimuk and Hugh. You've gotta have patience when working on minis! Thanks Mattprinn1997, but for some reason I cannot see the pictures you have attached.

I'm sorry but how the hell can that be the same mini?

And the bigger question 'Who in their right mind would run over an inocent mini in a tank in the first place?!!!

Nah, can't be. I reckon the first one was a stunt double :-)

Over at Classic Jaguar (in the US) they're restoring a Cooper for a client and they've just done similar repairs to the gutter rail... http://www.classicjaguar.com/gk.html

Paul.

No, it really was the same mini, I dont know why they bothered restoring it, probablty because they only had of about 4 minis for the series and diddnt want it to go to waste, what i would have done is kept it the way it was for a display. But it has been (or bean ;D sorry that was terrible) rebuilt and was taken over to america alongside the main prop car.

No, it really was the same mini

Hmmm... if you replace 90% of the panels (which they must have done) then it isn't the same car in my humble opinion. I know this has been to court a few times where people have bought 'original' cars only to find they've been restored to a point where they are no longer considered to be the same car.

I wonder if they painted the bonnet black so that the fit would look better. Maybe I should try this with mine hahaha

Paul.

Thanks Paul, I just had a look at that link. Looks like they replaced the drip rail on the underside of the gutter. Interesting stuff and it looks like they do some very high standard work, looking at some of their other projects. Thanks.

On the subject of the bean car, cant be the same surely? nothing on it would be reuseable, you can even see in the crushed photo that the seats were different on said car.

Thats the thing I don't understand either, during the episode when the tank goes over it you can see that the upholstery is the usual orangey beige and brown colour then it changes. The car is the same however, obviously they didn't use much of the car, but when filming they crushed more than one car and they probably used bits off all the ones they used.

Ok guys, this is what I had a go at today. At first I had no idea how I was going to do it. Took me about 20 minutes of thinking before I came up with this solution.
Two pieces of 6mm round bar curved to shape and tack welded together.
Posted Image

Piece of metal cut to shape and clamped to the round bar and folded round.
Posted Image

Had to keep dressing the metal and clamping it to get it to the correct shape. With it curving in two different directions it kept creasing. I nearly gave up but it eventually got persuaded into my way of thinking!
Posted Image

This was the reason for going to all this trouble, more rot!
Posted Image

Can't tell from the outside.
Posted Image

Cut out.
Posted Image

Tacked in.

Next piece.

Not too bad. Quite pleased.

A few bits to finish grinding tomorrow.

Thanks
