Hi guys,

I'm looking for the location of the reverse light switch on a 1989 mini automatic 998cc. Any clues? Pics would be nice, not required though.
The problem is that the reverse lights just don't work. I pulled out the engine a while ago, but don't remember plugging out/in a switch like that.

The same is actually true for the start inhibitor switch, can't seem to remember that I unplugged it. Any clues where I can find that one?

Cheers,

Nicolas.

On manuals it is on the side of the gear selector under the car......

Underneath the car it seems, indeed, I found it! It seems to have been replaced already, I can tell by the non-standard connectors

Think the reverse light switch is on there as well

Well, if it is, I didn't find it! I did however find the green and green/brown wires that connect to the switch. They were just lying around under the carpet unconnected.

Am I correct to assume that the mini automatic doesn't have a reverse light switch? If it does have one, where in heavens name can it be? Can anyone share a picture perhaps?

Cheers,

Nic

The Mini automatic certainly does have a reverse light switch! It's a round 4-terminal switch on the back of the selector unit - look under the car. Two of the terminals are for the start inhibitor, two are for the reverse light. Some very early cars had only two terminals for the inhibitor, but the switch is the same - you can only get the 4-treminal type now.

For sensible info about auto Minis, try the Automatic Mini Register.

I had a feeling it might be something like that. I'll see if I can find a switch like that... (anyone have a minispares ref. nr.?)
Thanks for all the help!

Regards,

Nic.

Hmmm, looks like a challenge, Somerfords list it as being obsolete...

Try contacting Martin at MRA Minis (he posts on here) who is best able to advise on autos.

It's obsolete because the combined inhibit and reverse switch was only fitted in 1965! All other autos have two switches, the reverse light switch is the same part as used in the manual and is fitted to the selector housing.

Well, that's exactly what the somerford catalog says (http://www.somerford...hts-1959-75.pdf)

So then my quest for the switch continues, perhaps it's just not fitted, or they fitted an incorrect selector housing.

Any clues where exactly I can find the hole to screw in the switch?

Might also be useful: I found a diagram of the housing (the old one) here (http://autominiregis...play&thread=501):
