Hello,
I am about to leave for a festival with 4 friends in my mini (one rather large), combined with a roof rack with 6 chairs, gazebo and four tents on top (two pop up ones) and a load of drink in the boot.
Is there a chance that my mini will give up? Or blow a tyre? What kind of speeds should i be doing to make sure that we don't die, hah
Help would be appreciated,
Anton

as long as there is at least 2 BAR in each tire and no more than 100 pounds on the roof you should be fine. speed is going to vary depending on how the car feels as you start going faster. if it starts to feel weird or "floaty" then just back off it a little bit.

Anyone know the GVW for a mini?

Overloading a vehicle past this is an offence, the police use visual indications to decide if you as a car owner are overloaded, and it carries a hefty penalty fine.

Goods vehicles are weighed by VOSA (fair), cars are judged by the police (arguably unfair decision).

Remember, your brakes are going to be pretty pointless with all that weight, so I wouldn't even think of driving at any speed.

Not as much as they did in the film is the answer! At 1968 gold prices, $4M of gold was 3.2 tons. Between 3 Minis, each with a driver and passenger and a kerb weight of about 590kg......

So not that much! The maximum gross weight (MAM) for the car is stamped on the VIN for some years, but not always. It's less than the 1800kg required for the movie. It is designed as a 4 passenger car though and meant to carry a lot of luggage too so just be careful how you load it and drive it. Don't go crazy on the roof.

but remember that the italian job minis had a propshaft fitted so other mods could have been done so increasing the weight they could carry.

But then, they did modify the minis in the film to take the extra weight

Has the OP who asked the question made similar modifications then? Because please remember this is a serious question from someone worried about their real car in the real world. I do make movies for a living remember, I know the difference. The fact that it's only a movie is what I was trying to point out.

And propshaft? NO! The 'trouble with his differential' line is A a joke, and B written by someone who doesn't know what front wheel drive means. Or the director just decided it looked better for the back of the car to be jacked up rather than the front on the blocking. It's only a movie!

My mind has just been blown....

On a note regarding the actual question. I have loaded my car just as heavily and it survived fine. I just had trouble with tyre scrub on the rear arches.

I think that's someone else on here. I'm a camera grip. Although the unit stills people who work for the publicity department usually are very much part of the crew. Stills photographers who work off set are a different thing altogether.

It was all fine guys, done about 60MPH all the way as 70mph was a push too far.
I think i've done my suspension though as we went down a pot hole and the rear drivers side rubs against the wheel arch with the weight on, without the weight it is fine, think my suspension or something has gone, i need to get it checked out.
