Right, just started getting puffs of blue smoke on startup and when I change gear.
Am I right in thinking that it should just be the valve seals?
We did a compression test a few months ago and was getting around 180 psi on all cylinders IIRC.
Didn't really notice any smoke then, but you can see it pretty clearly now.
Still pulls fine, and its not there under full throttle, only when changing gear and startup.
Thanks

im sure blue smoke is burning oil, cant be much more help than that unfortunately.

A puff of smoke on start up would tend to indicate valve stem seals, not so sure about the change up. What about on the over run and accelerating hard. If there is smoke then the oil control rings could be worn.
Doing the valve stem seals is the cheapest option, change them but at the same time have a look at the bores to see if there is any wear.

Don't think there's any when accelerating or on the overrun.
My Dad, who was driving behind me today as we had to get two cars MOT'd, said he could see a puff of blue smoke when I changed gear.
Then, when the car was on the ramps, and it was started to be moved, I saw the puff of smoke, and then nothing, it was fine.
It does use a bit of oil, a lot less now I've sorted the majority of the leaks.
Just hope I don't end up spending money on the head when it comes off just because, 'its off so I might aswell',
oh and what's the test with doing a comp test, then putting oil down the bores and doing another comp test. I can't remember what the results indicate.
Thanks

Right if you do a wet test ie oil down the bores and the compression increases then its possible rings/ bore wear. If the compression does not increase then its valves.
Hopefully got that the right way round

I was getting blue smoke on full throttle, turned out to be the fuel pump leaking petrol into the oil....

as sonikk said it one or the other rings or valves, but with midas mk 1 his oil was being thinned down with fuel, and oil would then bypass past the rings up into the combustion chamber.

could check that the breathers are clear and that the engine isn't overfilled with oil

I would change stem seals first and then see if it is still smoking as it is a lot easyer and a engine rebuild, but when my valve stem seals went it was blowing smoke inbetween gear changes.
