Was just wondering, i've heard a lot about people painting their vinyl headlining with emulsion and i was thinking of doing it myself rather than buying a whole new headlining kit. If you have done it to yours or know someone who has, what did it come out like?

Also, does anyone know which type of emulsion i should use and what colour is best, E.G. white/off white/ magnolia, pictures if possible.

Thanks,
Tom :)

Emulsion, really?

You can buy special "paint" for vinyl, it flexes, you can even buy (although more expensive, I know I've just bought some!) Dye which chemically eats into the vinyl or plastic, and doesn't ruin or fill in the texture of plastics or vinyl.

I'll be using my dye on some mini dash plastic soon, I'll stick up a guide on how I did it in a few weeks, It could be awful, but it's pretty impressive stuff from the videos I've watched...

i would have used a vinyl dye, i even looked into it, but the problem is that my headlining is very patchy where the old glue has sunk into the vinyl so dye probably wouldn't work very well (may stay patchy) so i decided that ill just paint it and if it comes out badly its not the end of the world and ill just get a new one :)

I would still use this stuff.

if you load it on slowly it should cover the patches.

I painted mine with black emulsion. It came out really nice, it was just a shame my headlining was so tatty round the edges to begin with.

I just made sure it was thoroughly cleaned with thinners and gave it a good coat of emulsion with a foam roller, did my sun visors too:

thanks buddy,

looks really nice, you don't really see many black headlinings (its a shame, they look really smart) just a shame that black wouldn't match the rest of the car (bright blue and white) :(

Did my Clubby's headlining a couple of years ago with white 3M aerosol vinyl paint. Spent a lot of time masking and did it in situ, lying on my back across the seats. Was wishing I had a mask by the time I'd finished (make sure you've got good ventilation if you do it this way)! Top result, though, looks totally original.

Thanks for the tips guys :) did it this weekend, used brilliant white matt emulsion, and it came out great, and the vinyl is still fairly flexy and the paint doesn't crack. i was a bit wary about using brilliant white for headlining as i was going to use cream but it has actually came out great, especially as i am having the car resprayed in laser blue with white roof, mirrors, stripes etc.

I would definitely recommend using emulsion to anyone else if they can't afford new headlining :)
