Hi
I've just got round to fitting my engine and gearbox back into the mini!
I've come across a problem when selecting gears. The problem is there is no feeling in the gears. It is as if there is no gate, you can select 1st gear, then without any resistance you can move the gear lever straight over to 3rd, then to 4th, 2nd and back to 1st in a square with no feel what so ever? I didn't touch the box when it was out, only to fit an x pin diff and to replace the diff output cover gaskets! The only thing I can think of is if I left that spring and ball detent out of the diff cover?
Any ideas would be great thank James.

When changing the differential, did you disengage the interlock spool, eg to lock the gearbox, maybe to change the pinion ?
It sounds like the selector rod and interlock spool are 180 degrees out, therefore, not engaged with the selector pivots in the gearbox... these are what give the "H" pattern of the gear change.
But prior to panicking, just check the rod change is actually connected to the gearbox with the split pin..

Thanks for the reply.
To be honest I didn't rebuild the gearbox as it was done 6k miles before the engine came out. The only 2 things I did to the box were, I replaced the diff end cover gaskets (could it be something to do with the detent, left out maybe?) The other thing I did was to put in an x pin diff. I just unbolted the housing, swapped the crown wheel onto the new diff, then bolted back up.
The pin looks fine at a glance, but I'll double check in the light tonight.
Thanks, James.

If the detent spring and ball are missing it would only make the gear change sloppy, it would not affect the H pattern, if you can engage 1st ( I would check that it's even doing that by putting it in first and trying to push the car forward ) and then you can move the gearstick sideways to where 3rd is then the selectors in side the box are not being moved...

Just to check the simple things first, when i refitted the engine in my mini i was a little impatient and tested the gears before i connected the second supporting rod above the gear linkage. This meant that like you, you could move the gear stick all over the place and have no affect what so ever.
Have you fitted this?
Sorry to point out the obvious but it can some time save a lot of hastle.

we have tried to drive it in first gear, managed to get moving like we was in first then went to put it in reverse but could not engage reverse so pushed it back then tried to engage first gear again but we couldnt engage first after we tried reverse as it was going in a higher gear everytime we tried to put it in first so maybe in 3rd or 4th?
as for the second supporting rod that is 100% connected as we checked that last night before we put the mini back in the unit for the night

Could it be anything to do with the gear lever not engaging in the box part under the car? I just don't understand why I'm having problems when it was fine before it came out and all I've done is what I mentioned earlier.

Check the two remote mounts are still attached at the back of the remote housing ( this is the thing the gearstick is in )
