the old car went back to it's original plate
it's what the DVLA prefer to do as long as the plate is still free and in there system

I agree, I think you get given a non-transferable age related reg rather than the original in most circumstances.
I've swapped my plate 4 times onto various cars and always got the original one back

I got the original G reg plate back.
I think its the norm now.

You have to pay to keep the number on retention because if you don't it will go back into the pool and either get deleted or reissued. Remember you don't actually own a registration, you merely have the right to use it. It's only a reference number not a physical item or even intellectual property. Registrations are meant for use on vehicles so if you want to reserve it but not use it on a car you have to pay, it remains the property of DVLA at all times though because it's a reference from their system.
