I had a chat with the guy that gave me the renault 9 alternator... he knows a guy that offers a call-out service so he will come drill, tap and fit the thread insert... but probably only next week...
Will I need to replace the head gasket Again? I've torgued down the 9 head bolts and I imagine that has compressed the head gasket... but is it necessary to replace it as it was a new one?

The head will need to be off to fit the insert and so you'll need a new head gasket. Make sure it's a BK450 as they are the best available now. It's never worth trying to re-use a head gasket as it will liklely fail sooner rather than later and usually at the most inconvenient time.

Thanks cooperman... I'll get a new head gasket... not sure which one they have available here... I'll just have to settle for whatever they have in stock unfortunately...

Sorry, hadn't realised you were not in the UK. I'm sure Mini Spares would send you one very quickly if you phoned Richy at Mini Spares North (+44 1423 881800). He's very organised with prompt mailn order. Vat-free in SA as well.
