a week between coats and around 6 months before flatting back and polish
i think you lost your shine as the paint hadn't gone hard
there is a difference between dry and hard

Still need to get my finger out and test rollering out on my old bonnet to see what I can acheive. Alot of roller projects look great on the net but I still don't think i'v seen a good job in the flesh yet....unless they were that good I didnt realise it was rollered. lol

Go for it, but remember that the prep required is no diff to spraying and it takes longer. But for £60, I can't grumble. Even considering repainting my 'new' beetle daily this was as the paints sh*te on it
What ratio of paint to thinners to you abide by?

I found that 20% thinners worked for me.

Just to throw it out there, if you are wanting a cheap paint job but don't want to roller your car you could consider this option:-
Buy an Earlex spray station( i paid £60 about 10 years ago) and then thin the rustoleum/hammerite/dulux or whatever paint you are using and then use the spray station to spray on the paint.
I did a Ford P100 pickup using white hammerite thinned with hammerite thinners sprayed with the spray station and it came out great. First coat was quite orange peely but that was because i hadn't thinned the paint enough so after thinning it some more, i got a great finish. Didn't even flat and polish it although that would have really finished it off (just an old workhorse so not worth it)
I also painted a Ministox car using black gloss Dulux thinned with petrol (don't try this at home) and the finish was outstanding which really surprised me. The gloss was so deep and the shine was amazing.
I also fully re-sprayed a Vauxhall Corsa a few years back using the spray station but this time used proper car paint. The paint stood me in at about £180 including thinners, tack cloths, mixing cups, panel wipe etc and it came out really well.
It was a piece of salvage i bought that had a heavy front end collision. Because i did it up to sell, i wanted the best possible finish without spending too much hence the proper car paint.
I also sprayed it under a marquee.
Cant complain at all and it looked as good as it does in the picture.
I also sprayed the front end of my old merc after an accident in the same way.
Just thought it was worth a mention as rollering takes a long time o get right and it is hard to avoid brush marks etc in tight corners where the roller cannot reach.
Hope this is helpful.

Looks great Ben...afraid I have never sprayed. If mine looks pants will be investing in the paint station and spraying the last coat...unless your ever over this way and would do it for cash!

I hadn't used a spray gun before either apart from a bit of primer!
Just practice and fiddle with ratios and you will get there. when i did the P100, i didn't practice because i didn't care about the finish and it came out well. when i did the corsa and merc, i practiced on the old bent corsa panels to get it right.
Just take your time, try to avoid putting it on too heavily as it will run and too light and it will be dry. If you use car paint and lacquer, make sure you put the lacquer on heavily enough t get a gloss but not too heavily or it will sag.
Practice makes perfect

Just read this from start to finish. Some great results on here but it's like anything you see online, is it really that easy? Also, how long did it take from start to finish? Not including waiting for tcut just the initial painting?
Hi buddy,
I allowed 10 days give or take but went over.
1 day to strip the car, another day to prep it (lots of rubbing down) then 1 coat per day (8-10 coats) managed to 2 coat on hot days as it dried by late afternoon.
To roller the car took me about 30 mins, so not long to paint, just the drying times that slow the process. If you get the mix somewhere near right it doesn't take to long to rub down every 2nd coat with 800 grit. It did however take 2 days to put it back together...mainly putting the glass back in that took the time (remind me not to do that again!)
I would say allow two weeks to get it painted. then another 2-3 weeks before the final cut and polish (if the sun stays out!)
Give me a shout if you need any other info...pic is as the car stands now waiting to be cut and polished.
Cheers
Jay.
