Best Answer leadly , 11 October 2011 - 07:49 AM
Still need to get my finger out and test rollering out on my old bonnet to see what I can acheive. Alot of roller projects look great on the net but I still don't think i'v seen a good job in the flesh yet....unless they were that good I didnt realise it was rollered. lol

1. what conditions are needed? Does it have to be warm like its needed for cans etc..?
2. any specific types of 'roller' paint that are best?
3. what primer can you use? Is there a 'roller' primer or do cans need to be used?
4. what do you do about lacquer?
Cheers

Thought I'd dig this up as I would love to re-spray my car on a budget later on... few Q's though:

1. what conditions are needed? Does it have to be warm like its needed for cans etc..?
-Needs to be above about 5 deg, but the warmer the better. It will just take longer to harden off (not so much of a prob if your doing it inside)
2. any specific types of 'roller' paint that are best?
-I used rustoleum, and found it very good (haven't tried others so can't coment on if they are any good or better)
3. what primer can you use? Is there a 'roller' primer or do cans need to be used?
-You can use ut staight onto bare metal if you want to, depends more on the colour. If your car is currently a dark colour and you want it yellow, then you need to put an even barrier of a light coloured primer first.
Mine went from this

to this on 2 coats, no primer

But I think the grey is very forgiving and covers really well
4. what do you do about lacquer?
-There isn't one (only solid colurs and no need for it), but you could use rattle cans if you really wanted to

ok so with a roller, how to you get in around the edges of seems, the wheel arch lips, and all the fiddly areas?!
Would love to give it a go!
The best way is with a foam brush, but I didn't have any and used a normal paint brush
i cannot believe the finish you guys are getting with a flipping roller !!

I have been pretty impressed, mine needs a couple more coats and 2nd round of flatting and polishing, but for £60 and a couple of days work, I can't argue :) And some of the cars done on rolledon are amazing

But wooooaaa, that's expensive! Maybe ok for touch-ups, or a roof job or something...

Thats about the going rate for a custom mixed can. For rollering, its about £60 for 2.5ltrs (which has done 2 coats inside and out (inc the engine bay, inner wings and boot) which I don't think is bad at all
