The Oil filter will be the spin on type.

Don't put semi synthetic oil in, you're asking for trouble.

There are loads of threads about oil on here, no one seems to agree.

Although I think you'll find the most used oil is 20w50, a nice compromise between the engine and the gearbox (they share the same oil oddly).

The thinner the oil = more chance of burning oil or leaking it

Just get 20W50 oil from Asda/Morrison/Wilko - it's fine for a Mini. If the filter a screw on can - or paper element type? Certainly not 10W/40 semi synthetic - usual mis-information from Hellfrauds I'm afraid. Take everything they say with a Kilo of salt.......

The engine dates back to 1935 (yes, I know it's been updated over the years).
It was designed to run with mineral oil in its lump, so I wouldn't suggest putting synthetic in...
New from the factory they had 10W40 in them alright, but over the (many) years wear has done it's 'magic' so leaks and oilburn are quite common.
So for now a 15W50 or 20W50 mineral or the best choise you can make.

I have been putting cheap 15/40 in mine, but always mineral, not Semi and it's fine, along with a Unipart genuine spin on filter I pick up at the shows for a couple of quid Just change the oil regularly.

I've had Angelo my 1992 Mini Mayfair for a good 2 months now and he's in dire need of an oil change. Now, i want to change the filter along with the oil, can someone please let me know what oil i should buy, i believe it's 10w/40 part synthetic and the Oil Filter i need, preferably from Halfords as that's where i plan to buy the oil and the filter. Any advice from people who have attempted this before would also be appreciated, i'm not much of a mechanic and i didn't build my car, i just bought it in near mint condition

Cheers in advance.

Chap.

It is pretty easy changing oil, the oil filter might come undone by hand or you might need an oil filter tool. You can stap a screwdriver through it and undo it like that but thats not a good way to try really. make sure you put the new filter on hand tight. oh and use 20w/50 oil, i use halfords 20w/50 classic motor oil but you can use other makes.

I've been advised to use 10w/40 how sure are you that 20w/50 is safe to use?

Because 20w/50 is British Leylands / Austins / Rovers recommended oil for the mini.

Use 20W/50 not 10W/40, the engine will run better and gear changes will be smoother.

Rover only recommended 10W/40 because it's suppose to be a little better for the catalytic converter. I'd rather replace/remove the cat then the entire gearbox!

Yeah, sorry i forgot i posted that in the tech section, completely forgot about that, a mod can go ahead and close that one, simple mistake. I bought 2 Litres of 10W/40 from Halfords today along with TWO oil filters, one being a HOF203 and a HOF213, the 213 is a slightly bigger thread, but was listed for injection engine models and not ones with carbs as mine has, but the computer at Halfords said i needed a 213. Unless i'm putting my car in serious danger by using this oil for the next 6000 miles i think i'll stick with it, cheers for the help guys.

Chap.

I bought 2 Litres of 10W/40 from Halfords

Car is gonna need just under 5 litres... 2 litres is not enough!
Go for the 20/50 classic that Halfords sell...
