Here's the low down so far:
I was recommended to talk to John Cooper Works, and they do 90bhp conversions for MPI engines.
New cylinder head, hi lift rockers, inlet manifolds and exhaust system - all for a lazy £1,850.
And then the results: possibly an extra 5mph top speed, but a lot quicker getting there.
Swiftune do parts only, for the cylinder head and rocker assembly, for about £800; there would then be a day's labour on top of this.
So personally, it might be a bit hard to justify £1,850 for another 5-10mph...
Thanks for everyone's assistance on this topic as I'm now a bit the wiser on mods.

@ eddyg
Nope. the cam sits in the block, has followers resting on it, and then push rods coming through to the head. Then you have the rockers which actually act on the valves to open them.

EddyG on an overhead cam engine yes it would - but on the 1950's designed A-series the camshaft is mounted low down in the block, and uses pushrods and rockers to open and close the valves.
The only way out for the cam is 'forwards' through the front of the engine, and there isn't enough clearance in the engine bay of a mini to extract it. There's other reasons on 1275 engines as to why it can't be done in car (it is possible on an 850/998/1098 engine in situ if you have a flipfront with no inner wings), so yeah, the engine needs to come out, then be partially stripped to get the camshaft out.

What engine mods are possible to a 1.3i engine (1995 Cooper),

If your car was registered in 1995 then it is an SPI. MPI were introduced circa 1997
