I have a 1976 mini with a 1995 SPi engine, now running on twin su carbs. The SU electric fuel pump is mounted in the engine bay on the bulkhead. I am fittning an engine steady and its right in the way!

Is there any specific location it needs to be?

Originally, the SU pumps were mounted on the rear subframe. They were designed to be 'pusher' pumps rather than 'puller'. The only issue you might have with it mounted near the carbs is the risk of over pressuring and flooding. Also, it is best mounted lower down and used to 'push' the fuel up to the carbs rather than drawing it up on the suction side.

Although this position may work... it will cause the pump the fail quicker as it is working outside of it's design brief. :shifty:

As above it needs to push fuel not pull it.

So best placed at rear of car then? Its a bit of an odd one really, SPI engine running on twin carbs. I dont know where the original SPI pump was, probably in the tank like most fuel pumps. There is a plate over where the mechanical pump would go, so I guess who ever converted it stuck in an electric pump.

Cheers for advice.

A 'puller pump is subject to fuel vaporisation in hot weather - much more reliable mounted low down at the rear so the suction is flooded from the tank. However - choose the location carefully so it doesn't get splattered with mud and /or ripped off at the first bump. Inside the boot is a good place if you can fit it in past the spare wheel.

Cheers for that (sorry for late reply, been offline for a bit!).

I dont have a spare wheel right now, but am working on it. Was going to mount on rear bulkhead on the boot side obviously on two rubber bobbins or something.

Cheers,
Richard.

It's original position would have been on the longitudinal part of the rear subframe, ie under the tank to ensure it gets fuel fed to it by gravity.

Ah...good point. Does it need to be below the fuel tank then? I was going to mount it higher than where the natural exit for the fuel is from the tank. Might just fit a mechanical pump instead!

Just a thought, correct me if I'm wrong. What if you replaced the HIGH pressure intank pump with LOW pressure 'lift' pump, like in old 2 pump volvos, commodores, etc?

The pump you have shown in your link AUA25 is a puller type pump which should be mounted higher up near the carb.

Other mounting positions for alternative pumps are shown here at the bottom of the page,

Hmmm, not sure to be honest..! MiniSpares list it as a "Pusher" type:

http://www.minispare...ty=pb&pid=34645

So if its a puller I cant mount it in the boot?

Think I'll do that, if mine is a puller type and now no good to me.

I wired mine to a switch in the cabin. Great for security and its also nice to know you can turn the fuel off if you have a prang.
