Hi,

I have cracked the number plate on my 1980 mini. Its the type with the plastic raised riveted letters on the white/yellow backing.

Been googling, but can't find anyone who can make them up. Found people who do the white/silver on black or tin pressed plates. But i would like to put the correct style on there.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

Steve

Any new plates for post '73 vehicles made now must be made to the current spec.

But he hasn't asked about black and white plates. Pressed yellow/white plates are available, I had some for my old mini.

Yes pressed ally coloured plates are available, the plates with separately applied raised letters are available, all sorts are. They are only available from show plate places because they are no longer legal when assembled as a new plate. As I said all replacement plates made now for post '73 vehicles have to be made to the current standard nomatter what style was common when the vehicle was made. A couple of years ago the DVLA consolidated all the previous formats together because what was and wasn't legal on any particular vehicle had become too complex with all the different styles used over the years. Show plates are of course also illegal, unless you leave the original plate visible too which makes them kind of pointless.

So if you really want one, find a show plate place and get one made up. Bear in mind it isn't legal but it would be almost impossible for anyone to prove it. Unless there is a date of manufacture stamped on it or something like that of course.

Pressed plates are quite popular in the VW scene - I'm toying with getting some made up for my 1980 T3 camper. This place sells them and claim they are legal:

Try "Tippersvintageplates.co.uk"
Based in St Austell Cornwall, they make virtually ANY type of plate that has ever been on a car!!!!

Hope that helps

They are under the heading of "Tippers 70's plates"
