Slow but still progress.
A bit more paint & onto the stand.
The stand adaptor is one available from ebay for A & A+ blocks.
I have the skills & tools to have made one myself.
But my time is very limited at the moment. So it was more efficient to buy one.
It's well enough made & fits a typical stand.
I can now get on with cleaning the block.

Drilled, tapped & removed the oil gallery plugs last night. Pretty straight forward job.
Made a simpler puller from a bolt & socket. Hope I didn't introduce more debris than I was intending to remove.
On with the block clean.....

Slight holdup on the crankshaft installation.
Centre main bearing is binding. Two outer bearings are fine.
Crank runs true in the centre. Will try swapping some bearings around to try & work out what's actually wrong.
Probably looking at having to have the main bearings caps line bored. But a good learning experience.
I've also purchased one of those fancy sandblasting cabinets.
The flywheel housing & a few other parts need cleaning up. The housing has quite a few years of corrosion.

I would be very interested to see how well it comes up as i want mine done but don't know what to expect with regards to how well it will come up. Mine is about the same condition as yours and i don't have the patience to clean it by hand awkward places to reach.

Agreed, normally I happily attack corrosion with a wire brush or similar. But this housing & some other parts I have are too detailed. I would also like half decent finish as it pretty visible in the engine bay. I setup the cabinet yesterday. So hoping to get going on it tonight.

Look forward to seeing it. I have considered getting a cabinet to do my bits in.
I did consider painting my housings silver but have seen others do it and i'm just not convinced. it looks too bright for my liking.

Gave the blast cabinet a go last night.
I took advice from Machine mart man on grit options. He suggested soda blast for aluminium.
It didn't do a bad job. Got the worst of the corrosion & paint off, but only really tickled the surface.
Would be good for delicate items or panels.
So I tried some 80/120 grit. Much happier with results. More the typical sand blasted finish. It's not quick & the process needs some refinement. But it's proved the point. The casting looks alot better already.
Also while I was on a roll, I swapped the main bearings around on the engine build. All ran nice & sweet. I can only presume I had some debris on the crank or bearing cap causing it to bind. I'll get some new bearings & try again as the first set got scored.

A tip I like to use on some alloy parts that are to be left after blasting is run the on a wire wheel get a nice finish not highly polished but does make the look better

Quick update as it's been a bit quiet on the Bob engine.
I wasn't sure what heat treatment process the crank had, probably just the standard stock. So I dropped off the crank to Rob Walker Eng. for tuftriding/polishing & also the pistons & rods to be fitted together. Will be around another week to get those back.
I've started looking at the cylinder head. It's an 11 stud version I got from ebay a couple of years ago. All looks good. It's freshly skimmed & generally reconditioned. Valves aren't the biggest but they should be fine for this engine.
It's had some porting done, good valve guides & generally looks very clean. Even the correct colour.
I purchased some new double valve springs from Minispares at their Oldbury open evening. I attended this with my MK3.
As soon as I locate my valve lapping tool I'll get the head fixed up.

So the ball is back in my court again to crack on with assembly.
