ive looked up the DIY way of doing it but dont fancy trying that...got a feeling i will do it wrong.

anyon else had this problem?

i reckon i could take it to a repair place but just wondering if its still £130 to sort it out??

You can download anything you've previously downloaded for free.

You could get a new ps3 and swap hard drives. But its best to send to sony - but they'll wipe your harddrive.

Never encountered the YLOD, can you access the XMB?

sorry im a tard...whats a XMB?

but ive seen a company called console doctor. as far as i know (but i havnt looked at) sony charge £130 for it and it may take 3-4 weeks or console doctor and poss 1-2 weeks and £60 so will need to get some customer reveiws and talk to a few mates that know this sort of stuff.

so can i lob in a usb and keep the games and downloads and stuff on there?

basically the ylod means when you try to turn it on, it bleeps once as normal, light goes green, then yellow for half a second, then red and turns off. managed to get the game out of the ps3 by doing a fan test (i'll explain if you like) but dont want all the stuff i got free to go bye bye

Xmb = menu.

If you can access the menu, you can insert a flash drive or hard drive (at least 60gig or your going to have to go on a data diet!!. But I think it needs to be formatted in FAT32 format - google it.

If you can't access the menu, you can't do a backup. Ask console doctor if they need your hard drive- if not, keep it when you send it off.

You could remove it and copy the hdd, but formatting a large drive in FAT32 is VERY VERY hard.

I read that and wondered what you were talking about. Did a bit of Googling and found what you meant.

Microsoft really know how to shoot themselves in the foot don't they? Still, Command Prompt isn't too difficult to use and that should allow you to format a drive up to 1TB (according to Google, I've not actually done the maths).

I dunno if you can say it was MS or Sony who shot themselves! It's such a PITA format to use. But I do use it in my camera.

I've managed to do a 60gb hdd before (ps3's old one before I upgraded upto a 500gb drive).

I'd say both! Microsoft for limiting the maximum external drive size that can be formatted in FAT32 to such a small number when FAT32 will support much larger drives than that. And sony for not using NTFS or something else modern.

FAT32 will support an 8TB hard drive, but my god it'd be the most wasteful setup ever. Except for storing really really large files.
