Hello all,
I've been thinking, how easy would it be to fit a webasto style sunroof to my mini, and also how much do you think it would cost?
Has anyone done this before to their mini?

this is the sort i have in mind :Attached File  f05fe33dede9b0240ff097aba636e256_medium.jpg   42.51K   47 downloads

I hope you have deep pockets, these things can go for a fortune on ebay and othrer such places. For cost new, i would guess at even more. Idealy you need a template before cutting into the roof of your beloved Mini, not a job for an amature mechanic in my opinion. if you mess up it's going to cost you a lot more. But at the end of the day if you really want to do it, then do it. Think really hard before you set it in motion. As soon as you cut into the roof skin thats it really no going back from there (Unless you buy a new pannel of course or make some repair patches)

Practical Classics did a feature on fitting Webasto Sunroofs to cars and conveniently enough it was a Mini they fitted it to! It was a recent issue. i'll try and track down the issue number apparently it was the 'Spring Issue' 2011

Then think again!!

It's bad enough having to deal with the lifetime of leaks and security issues that are associated with owning a mini that already has a sunroof fitted, without ruining a perfectly good, secure and watertight solid mini roof! :)

The cost and the ease of fitting really are the least of your problems! If you do decide to go for it though (and when you do inevitably get sick of driving around with wet feet), then there is a whole host of advice on here of how to weld on a new solid roof panel or bond a fibreglass roof over the hole you made!! ;)

i love my webasto roof, but mine is now 25 years old and is beginning to leak. there are bits cropping up on ebay every so often, the skin is about £250, and i have seen an entire electric removed unit go for about £500. not cheap

It really is only a matter of time!!....(Strangely mine didn't used to leak either!!)

Like I've have said here many times before.... "There are two types of classic mini sunroofs, those that leak and those that don't.... yet!!"...... Similarly there are also two types of people who own minis with sun roofs, "Those that love them and think that they are a great idea..... and those that used to!!" :)

If you have someone with the know then maybe a BINI sun roof conversion could be an option...and possibly cheaper. There was a revived thread on here only a few days back that had pics of a Mini with it. Looked ACE.

Kept a lot of the interior roof BINI styling too....very nice touch.

I have just bought a complete Webasto roof from a British Open Classic for £45. It needs a new cover and the wires that run down the sides of the cover are corroded and need replacing too. Taking the roof to a chap who does vehicle retrims on Friday to find out how much it will cost to get it re-covered.

Hope to do a build thread on it when i start cutting!!
