Model: Mini Cooper Sportspack Twin Point Injected
Year: 2000
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):

Lately my car has started boiling over the expansion tank after idling for ~10 minutes. Probably just the expansion cap but I've also had a very slow leak from the water pump (I think, can't see where else it might be coming from). Thought I'd take the opportunity to check the rest of the coolant system.

Took the water pump off and this is what I found:

Can't really see why this would cause a leak and don't want to buy a new pump if necessary. So, do you think I should get a new pump or just use this one? Obviously a new gasket and bolts will be used when reattaching.

Also, with regards to my boiling over problem, I'm replacing the cap, thermostat (old one seems ok but for a couple £ I thought I might as well), water temp sensor. I've also flushed the system with Holts 2 part system and will refill with 50:50 Ethylene glycol antifreeze. Anything else you can think of to check whilst I'm on?

Thanks in advance

Chris

It looks like a bit of corrosion has started there so replace it and the stat, at least then you can rule those out if your problem starts again. Change the cap as well then that's everything covered.

If its still boiling then get a sniff test done to see if there is an issue with the head gasket. One thing though is make sure you have got all of the air out of the system.
