I am looking to buy a standard mg metro camshaft for my 998 turbo build as i was told these were a good camshaft for a 998 turbo. And i came across a fella that has various camshafts in stock on the net but i had to e-mail to see if he has the one i want and he said he had a std metro KENT cam and a FAI 1275/1300 BMC cam and im wondering if these are what im looking for. Also would the std metro cam he has be a kent 500.

I suggest an MG Metro cam will not be ideal for a turbo...... Just use a standard 1275 cam - that's what Rover used on the turbo 1275. Don't pay funny money either - stnadard 1275 cams are 10 a penny........

I actually nearly had a std 1275 cam bought but did a bit of research before i closed the deal and i was told that a mg metro cam was ideal for a 998 turbo. It mightnt suit a 1275 turbo though. i think a std 1275 will work ok too but the mg metro one is much better. Im new to all this so im no expert, and i could be wrong but ive seen this in a couple of fourms. Also you said a std 1275 cam are cheap, is this new or used. I supose its not a good idea to use a used cam is it?

No. Get a mg cam, much better and provides better improvment in power. It wont be holding you back.

Yes Try to use the MG metro cam if you can find one, it will be ideal for a 998 turbo,

If your pockes can stretch its worth considering one from Kent cams IIRC they are available as the KC500, but have a google to check I'm right.

The kent cams 266 is roughly the same profile as the mg one IIRC.

I reckon the turbo will blow right through the engine with the MG cam - it has a long exhaust period. But do carry on.......if you can find an MG cam these days. The other 'copy cat' cams tend to have more lift - which makes their use with 940 head on a small bore block rather difficult. I still maintain a standard 1275 cam will be fine - and nothing wrong with a pre-used one - provided it passes inspection of course!

the MG cam is fine

My last turbo cam had 290 odd degree's exhaust duration, and that was perfectly tractable, ok it was in a 1380 which will tame it a fair bit, but still...

also I ran 1.5 rockers.

Ha, i dont want that but a couple others seem to think it will work ok but dont want to do damage, ill do another bit of reading and see what i find, but do you think the cams i mentioned in the first post are mg metro ones

I thought it was the kent 256 is roughly the same

I've always heard the MG metro cam is great for turbos, same with the kent 266 and SW5
pretty sure the avonbar phase 2 turbo cam is something like 264 intake and 284 exhaust, so the phase 3 will probably be even more

You are not comparing like with like - the SW5 for example has very soft timing! A cam with a lot of overlap will allow the turbo to blow straight through - very inefficient and wasting fuel..........You need to sit back and decide if you want a high revving engine - or more of a high torque slogger.......

Get an MG metro one, those in the know of turbo set-ups all recommend it, have a search on turbominis and you'll see what I mean.

You can also pick them up for around £30 if you don't mind waiting for one!
