Hi guys. Just a quick one. Which type of splitter is best?
Forks are obviously the cheapest but a cup looks better. Scissor type seems supreme but the price is high. I want to reuse the ball joints its the wheel bearing thats knackered!

Halfords seem a bit pricey, £22 for same thing

I use the fork type and have had no problems with it (mainly due to being a fan of the brute force type approach).

Is there a risk of damaging the ball joint with a fork though?

The fork-type seems to damage the rubber cap, but it shouldn't harm the ball joint itself.
The scissor-type is best.

i wont be using a fork type ever again. they bend open damage components around it and never seem to work as they should.
id say the scissor type would be my next port of call

I USED TO HAVE A WEDGE TYPE ONE WHEN RACED MINIS YEARS AGO AND YES IT CAN DAMAGE THE RUBBER CUP

They both have their plus's and minuses, if the joint is really stubborn you can strip the threads in the scissor type (been there need to replace mine) and so the fork one comes into its own there.
I have also tried the technique of hitting either side of the joint with two hammers at the same time (saw it on wheeler dealers and gave it a try) although the joint did not spring apart the shock did loosen it so a light tap on the nut did spring it apart (do not hit the thread you will damage it, always leave the nut on with enough threads engaged.)
I would rather use the scissor type at the end of the day especially if you are reusing the ball joint / track rod end etc.

Bought the scissor type. Came off no problem. Wheel bearing changed and back together. All good! Now I need to get my manifold welded up and then I can get it through an MOT! Thanks for the help guys.
