Model: Sprite
Year: 1983
Description of problem (please be as in depth as possible):
Basically i want to go quick release on my steering wheel. i currently have a non-standard wheel, but i believe the bolting pattern is standard,

Its the same pattern as this wheel:

So what parts will i need?

i would like to keep the wheel as far away from me as possible as i am on the taller side - so low profile parts would be better. I would also like to keep costs low (without destroying the quality)

Thanks in advance

I got this for my Mountney Wheel. Which is the same as the one you have pictured above. all that is also needed is the exsisting Boss.

There are a few different bolt patterns for wheel boss', to say any of them is standard would be stretching it a bit. Most companies use their own pattern.

You need a quick release boss for a Mountney wheel with a Mini spline. I'm not sure there are any low profile Q/R bosses that use the Mountney pattern, it's quite old now and most newer designs are different.

Thanks. i also have a MOMO 3 bolt (triangle pattern) wheel that i could use.

So do i just order the boss and then im ready to go?

EDIT: googling mini spline to mountney wheel dosnt bring anything back useful, same as if i do for momo

If the spacing is the same as the usual modern 6 point wheels (is it?) could i use this boss? and just use 3 screws.

The wheel at the top is a Mountney classic and i am not aware fo any off the shelf 'snap off' boss kit that will fit it.

The Mountney sport wheels have a smaller more common and standard bolt pattern that will fit the most common and available snap off boss kits. :D

Im not so sure about the Momo wheel

Thanks, im wondering if the Momo wheel is effectively 3 of the 6 bolts that the mountney sport wheels have.

It is an odd pattern though

Same problem, think I've found solution - a new boss unit - pretty much same length as standard boss unit

i have a quick release kit on a mrk2 golf I had years ago, it was great! and I really want to get something similar setup on the mini now.

its very confusing shopping for this stuff online, when I bought the kit years ago I got it from halfords, which was good cause you could pick the wheel you liked the feel off from the large collection they had in store, get a boss that fitted - then ordered in the quick release kit.

the only 'issue' I noticed was that the wheel ended up (after boss and quick release boss ontop of that) sticking much further out from the position of the original wheel.

you do get used to this is has to be said - BUT, if there was a way to minimize this added wheel height it would be good.

Ive seen slim quick release kits available .. but dont know if they fit mini boss' ?

why dont someone create a wheel that has an inbuild quick release boss ??

so for example I need -

I feel your pain but keep in mind that a company that makes aftermarket wheels doesn't necessarily want to limit the use of those wheels to one or two makes and models of car nor do they want to limit the sale of those wheels to someone who wants to use a quick release.

I have not seen any high-quality low-profile quick release hubs but most I have seen have been Chinese made. The better quality (taller) spline or hex drive types can be made to work with "street car" steering columns but often require welding in place. That leaves them low-profile but also a permanent addition to the car as you cannot "un-weld" the adapter from the column.

Though not an option for everyone, I have seen off the shelf hubs machined "shorter" and further machined to accept the fixed portion of the quick release. In many cases this completely eliminates the possibility of using the traditional horn button but it is low-profile. This isn't possible with all adapter hubs though as many modern ones are made from expanded sheet metal to achieve a crush zone for accident safety. Older hubs were often die cast aluminum that could be modified.

In summary, anything is possible with the some creativity and money.
