3 Pin Switch-why Does It Have The Earth?

That diagrams does show it with the feed from the Main Beam circuit to the switch. That circuit will also flash the driving lights with the Main beam flash as long as the switch is on.

Main beam wiring is blue/white.



Surely if the switch is on then the lights would be on anyway. I want to be able to flash them from off

This was posted on a previous topic on this and shows the relay being triggered by the steering stalk flash but there is no switch facility to bring the spotlamps on seperately so their on permanently, only the fogs have a switch

yes it was also mentioned to take the supply from the starter (battery supply) not overloading the fusebox as they've done above

Look at the Halfords diagram again your reading it wrong.

The switch they show gets its input from the main beam circuit. So there is only power to that switch if the main beam is on, either when flashing or perminent.

Once main beam is on the switch as power going to it, flicking the switch completes the circuit to the relay. the relay then energises and sends power from the battery to your driving lights.

So either with switch on or off the driving lights will not work untill high beam is on

Also if you read the text they show the switch as optional, if you just ran a wire from the main beam circuit to terminal 86 of the relay shown, then driving lights would come on with main beam anyway without an isolating switch

No there isn't, because that would be illegal assuming you are in the UK. All required and optional main beam headlamps (that's what driving lamps and spot lamps are legally) must be extinguished and the dipped beam illuminated simultaneously by a single operation of a single switch. The spot lamps have to be wired through the main beam circuit. The switch is only there so you have the ability to turn them off if you don't want them on. This is written is just about every thread covering the subject.

Front fog lamps do not require a tell-tale on the dash in the UK. Nor do spots.

Doug, the rear fog lamp is more properly called a rear fog guard warning lamp. It's to give following traffic more warning that you are there in thick fog, it's only meant to be used in less than 150' visibility.
