I have bought new rubber cones for the rear but they are 10mm higher than the old ones 91mm as opposed to 81mm and now the top shock mount doesn't protrude enough to get the nut on, even with the whole weight on the suspension arm. Not using hilos. Have I been sold the wrong or dodgy cone? It is not a dunlop, it has made by Valley Rubber, but it has the patent number on it. Also a red dot on the inside and a nut.

Can you post a picture of the cones?

Can you lower the car onto it's wheel to push the shcok up through the fitting hole.

Sounds like your new cone, (that should be longer as it's not been compressed and worn down), is just holding the wheel down too far.

Ah - see you have the car down on the ground, get a couple of mates to add to the weight in the back.

Have you pulled the shock open to fully extend it. Normally a fair bit of movement on them.

Is the ball on the trumpet in the socket on the radius arm

Is the cone seated tightly into the subframe and the trumpet fully located into the socket on the rubber cone

All is seated correctly and shock fully extended. The extra height of the cone seems to be the problem - 10mm at that end gives 30? 50?mm at the wheel? What is the standard height of a new cone? Surely they do not lose 10mm through deterioration which makes me wonder if I have the right cone for the rear.

Over time, a cone will loose over an inch in height....

I have a pair of the same cones here and look fine...

If you have the car on the ground and the shocks do not come up through the mount then without compressing the suspension then when fitted and unloaded your shocks will be under stress and could break..

My suspicion is you have a 'lowered' set of shocks on the back.

They loose far more than 10mm through age, not so much at the rear usually but fronts collapse a huge amount and it can happen at the back. I really would like to see a photo of this cone, because if it's not from either Dunlop or Mini Spares it could kill you, there have been some really badly made cheap copy cones available for some years now that loose the metal band and so suddenly collapse. I don't recognise the name of the manufacturer and so personally I wouldn't be using it. The red dot makes me think it might be something to do with Mini Spares but I'd need to see a photo. Non-genuine cones aren't worth it.

The only M Parts I know of make Moke body and restoration parts. Where did you get them?

Valley used to run the tool, but no longer do. Its been moved twice since the tool was at dunlop, but still made using that tool, and the original Rubber compounds and testing equipment

Shocks are munroe R1531 B1 1007 and when extended are about 375mm from the hole centre to where the rubber mount washer sits.
