Back on track , had a busy week modifying the seat side mounts to get them to sit right. Had to cut quite a bit off the cobra mounts to get the passenger seat right and a low as I can
Posted Image
Then fitted the battery cable and secured it. Just need to put on the end for the cut off switch
Posted Image
Posted Image
Also had to mount the seat belt points in a different place as the position of the new seat and the new rails blocked the old mounts. These will be welded from underneath before any events. I secured all the brake and fuel "p" clips with Allen bolts bolted from the outside so they can be moved out of the way when I do weld the anchorage points
Posted Image
And finally modified the rear seat so that the pipe work has plenty of room under the seat

Looking good.....i need to play catch up now!

All looks very neat and tidy - i'm sure a scutineer will love it.

Where did you get your battery cable from and what rating did you get?

Well its still 98db@ 0.5meters from the rear but now they test from the side at 2.0meters@86db
The results of some or the pre tests are interesting

Very interesting - as I think you suggested before, the Escorts are going to be struggling, and some of them look like they may have problems even on stages or hillclimbs..... If that was a representative entry list for an event, there wouldn't be many starters!!

The last Ibiza is interesting - I've got a stage prepped 2.0 GTi as well as the Min, that the boy has been making noises about maybe re-trimming (we've still got all the interior for it), & as it's running a standard motor, looks like that would pass if he wanted to have a go...!!

I hope your Min gets through OK after all the work you've done to it...

Weird results.

Standard mk2 escort 1600 with standard exhaust making 89 dB @ 2m!! eh??? how can proper road rally escorts pass then??

Might have to fabricate a 'magic' valve to quieten things down if mine tests loud. May invest in a cheapo noise meter to check it.

The 2.2 making 100 at the rear & the same at the side intriqued me! Must have been a full on stage car just taken along to see what it made? That 'standard' 1600 must surely have had a duff exhaust to be that loud?

Is that the modern equivalent of the brillo pad up the tailpipe we used to use....??!! :D

I've been chatting to cooperman about it and has given me this advice;

What you do is to weld a 'fin' inside the end of the pipe going about 2" into the pipe in line with the flow and made from, say, 1.5 mm steel sheet. The end of the 'fin' projects about 1/2" out of the end of the pipe and you make some saw cuts into the 'fin' about 1/2" long, i.e. up the the pipe end. Then if it's too noisy you bend the extending pieces to make small deflection flaps, in both directions, to about 45 degrees from the flow direction. That deflects the noise a bit so that with the noise-meter to one side at 0.5 metres away it receives less direct noise. It does knock a db or 2 from the reading.

That's cunning!! I do wonder what the noise scrutes will make of it though...?

What do the regs say, are you allowed to run a bolt-on exhaust tip or you need the exhaust to be welded from the manifold to the end?

So far I can't find anything in the Blue Book regarding that, but it could just be covered in individual events ASR's. All I can find on this issue so far is;

5.17.7. Temporary Silencers, by-pass pipes or the
inclusion of temporary parts to achieve silencing
requirements are prohibited. Officials may refuse to
carry out Sound Checks on vehicles utilising temporary
parts in exhaust systems. Organisers are empowered to
exclude in such situations.

Actually, on reading it again that does actually cover bolt on tips, which would be determined as temporary parts, but it doesn't seem to cover Coopermans mod...

Ok thats out of the regs but you can try it anyway at your own risk.
Theres also the italian way, racing tape a flange on the pipe, then bolt on your custom tailpipe which will be obviousely longer.
After few miles, unbolt it, remove the tape, refit the custom pipe. Job done and no one will know. Maybe..

Except the Blue Book also has this reg.

"4.1.6. A further sound test of the same vehicles must
be made on any road sections, and these should be
manned by a Driving Standards Observer and/or Judge
(37, 38, 140(i), 141(a), G.7.8, G.11.2) qualified to carry
out their duties by experience.

Sorry Simon, de-railing the thread a bit now..."
