Hi,
I am currently rebuilding my 83 sprite. Got tired of bodywork to decided to strip the engine. Could not find any issues with it so started on gearbox. I can see a ball race from above and it appears that the bearing cage is broken, it is partly there but there are ball bearing rolling around the bearing casing without a cage.
I have no experience of mini gearboxes and i am assuming this is not right. Having just watched a video of a gearbox rebuild they call this the "third motion bearing".
Do these fail and break up?
I will take a photo tomorrow to show you all.
The rest of the engine is almost prefect, I am wondering if the car was taken off the road due to this gearbox failure.
Any opinions gratefully received.
Neil

While your at the gearbox its a good Idea to replace the main shaft double roller bearing. They can fail in the same way, causing an awfull whine. Might be as well to change the baulk rings to.

I hope it was my video's you were looking at
http://www.guess-wor...m/Tech/Rebuild/
and yes double rollers or 3rd motion bearings do fail, however, during production the bearing change from a full steel bronze bound bearing, which are very strong but noisy, to a cheaper 3/4 steel and a fibre/plastic binding, and then back to a full steel nylon/plastic binding in which are the ones currently available. The 3/4 steel variations are the most likely to break up.
When purchasing a double roller ( or any bearing for that matter ) don't be tempted by cheap unbranded versions, it's false economy. Brands to look for... RHP, SKF, Torrington, Timken and made in the EU.
