I've painted a few bits with smooth black spray can hammerite but with the slightest knock it seems to chip too easily. Its as bad as powder coating.

What am I doing wrong is it the paint is no good or does it need special primer. If it is as I suspect and the spray hammerite's not up to the job, what are you lot using.

I want to paint my bumpers and grille black but need an alternative to hammerite and powdercoating as its got to be non brittle being at the front with what the road can throw up.

I've said it for years- hammerite is rubbish! IMO the best way to do anything is to prep the surface properly, prime with an "oxide" type paint, then give 2 or 3 coats of good quality paint. Hammerite and powdercoat as you say can both be chipped, and when that happens to powdercoated parts, the water gets underneath and starts forcing it away from the metal when it rusts, and being a thick plastic coating you can't just sand it and touch it up, like you can with painted parts. It looks nice but thats where it ends for me!

Have you roughed up the surface prior to painting, if its not keyed then it will come off. If you are using it on a really clean surface then primer will help.

yes the surface was shot blasted first on most parts and primered.

only recently discovered the upol paints though so already coated the grille and bumpers with etch, now got some high build red oxide on order to go over that.

just need to find a good brand of black to go over that really that wont chip. I dont want to risk coating them in hammerite and it chipping and then having to take them all back to the primer coat again.

.. or, buy her some thing really really nice (not expensive) and then buy your self the bumpers and tell her you got'em dirt cheap and they're not as pretty as what ever you bought her

If it's chipping off as easily as you suggest, you're most likely putting it on too thickly. Hammerite is 'ok', i've used it for years and it has protected metal from some pretty harsh conditions.. but there's better stuff out there these days.

chassis black is what the chassis of hgv wagons used to be painted with, remember when they went for testing the chassis used to be done with a hot power wash and it shone like new.

it can also be brushed on.

I find POR rust paint really good, again search the frost website. The key though is in the prep, with POR follow the instructions, purchase the rust inhibitor too which etches the surface.

Rub down to bare metal... clean with a spirit, etch with rust spray, wash off and paint with POR. The stuff is rock hard and doesn't damage if hit by a hammer, even welding by it just burns it, but doesn't take it off!!! lol. Guess what though, it's not cheap and doesn't wipe off your hands.

I agree completely por15 is the stuff to use over hammerite. I've done a few of my own components in hammerite that i am now stripping back to re do in por15. Its quite watery stuff but give it a couple of coats and your fine. It is really hard wearing and can be put straight on to seasoned metal (no primer needed- they advise against it as it sticks really well itself).
Kind regards Blue
