Just adding some information to my thread so I don't lose where it is in the forum.
Fitting Central Pick Up pipe
You have to remove the large retainer plate at the pinion end of the gearbox then remove the locking plate (just slide out) and remove the layshaft and laygear, being careful not to drop the two thrust washers and any bearings that are within the laygear... the laygear and CPU have to be put together to fit wihin the case, its a little juggling act but not too difficult.
CPU = Central Pick Up pipe
Final stopper stage
Dolphin glaze as a stopper / top filler http://www.ebay.co.uk/sch/i.html?_nkw=U-pol+dolphin+glaze&_sacat=0&_odkw=dolphin+glaze&_osacat=0&_from=R40
Also been discussing how to overcome this little gap where I had an A panel fitted by a garage.
Going to strip the subframe down again tonight so its a bit lighter when I'm trying the fit of the new heel board sections.

I've not finished folding the lip over yet because as you can see it's somewhat of a tight fit.
I didn't want to do any more as I'm not sure way it wont right.
Also the top of the skin is a long way of the lip on the window. If I bring the skin down to meet it the holes for the hinges wont line up.
So that's as far as I got last night.

As for the skin, clamp it up as u are doing and see how it sits in the opening, it the hinge holes need redoing then just drill new ones, it's the fitted look that counts to me, and old holes can be welded up. My pattern skinsfitted ok, but the door handle hols were out so I just filed them out so the holes lined up, looks fine and works fine too, just measure many times first, but I'm sure you know that !!

The door skin is wrong at the back as the swage line is miles out at the back. The front looks good in relation to the A panel that's been fitted.
Is the door skin pattern or Heritage???

Hey grahama im really not sure the a panels right the more i look at it. But i was young in the ways of restoration back then. I would never have accepted it now.

If the gap is even along the bottom then if you want to use that panel then you will have to section it to get the lines right. That will cause distortion though so will need to be careful and take you time.
Out of curiosity whats the top of the panel to the top of the window frame distance like?? is it fairly even along the top or on a slant??

It looks like they might have used a mk3 on door step to try to repair your mk1 style door step and ended up with a mess.
Behind the a panel the step is supposed to curve up in the original arc, the LWB a panel then laps over it, there is a step when that angled portion is so the outside of the a and the outside of the door step sit at the same level.
Here are some crappy pics of a project car of mine.
The one without the a panel in place shows my crappy attempt at trying to repair the step... which does look a bit better then their crappy attempt >.>
The big thing is you are missing the shaped triangle of metal here where the black lines are.

The garage put on inner and outer a panels so could this be where my problems start.
I understand that the step is missing a section now thanks chris, rosslin racing also comfirmed that over PM.
So, next course of action? Pull it all off and start again or is it salvagable you think.
I guess pulling it off will amount to new:
Hinge panel
A panel
Proper lwb step

Sal are there any hinge mounting holes in the door frame at all??
I had to replace most of the flange on the door frame as it was rotten. Need to drill new holes on this side of the door so i guess i can move the holes in the frame if needs be.

Otherside thats not been touched.
Door frame seems to fit ok this side without the skin though.
