Hi all,

I have just got my mini (1275 metro engine) back on the road and there is a high pitch squeel which gets progressively louder from about 3,500 revs when in gear (any gear). What are the most common culprits of this? I have heard something about the ildler gear bearing but my knowledge in this area is not particularly great,

thanks,

Is it speed sensitive or engine revs ? Does it differ when going around a corner with some steering lock on ?

Wheel bearings are my most common source of "strange" squealing noises

Could be CV joints, water pump, gearbox.

Not necessarily something major.

its not the fan belt, its definitely metal on metal screeching/squeeling. Nope, its not wheel bearings, its rev related under load

it could be the clutch release bearing? mine squeels occasionally when i first start the car, or the first few times i slip the clutch to pull away when leaving my street/neghbourhood

1. Does it squeal when you are stationary ?

If it does then it's unlikely to be the transmission..

2. Does the sound change dependant upon RPM of engine and not road speed.

Again if it does then it's unlikely to be the transmission...

3. If the above two are true, then check the crank shaft pully bolt... when this comes undone, it make the unholiest of squeals as as it rubs on the engine mount bracket.

It doesn't make any noise when stationary, and appears to make the noise when in high revs, regardless of road speed, but only under load. It doesn't do it at idle when you rev it.

Guessworks - don't mean to sound dum, which bolt is that one?

after being out for another drive, it sounds a bit like straight cuts, high pitch screeching. Notible, when you go over bumbs, or drop down a gear you can hear it screech, stop, screech stop as if its the cars jerky movement which enhancing it, but this is only at higher revs - does this description help in identifying the exact problem better?
