I'm replacing the windscreen scuttle nd ash tray / top facia panels as they're both rotten.

Both of these panels are spot-welded to the top of the bulkhead. 95% of it looks solid but there's some light surface rust on both sides. Normally I'd want cut to cut the rust out but this looks superficial.

If the surface rust is wire brushed from an angle grinder, then treated with Kurust or BiltHamber Hydrate 80 (they're both coverters I think), can I spray on weld through primer and plug weld as normal? Or should I look to eradicate the rust by wire brushing and using Bilthamber Deox C or Hammerite Rust Remover instead before the weld through primer and plug welding? The rust looks only severe enough in one corner to warrant cutting out some metal.

Thanks,

Adam

Weld without primer and flood the seam with epoxy-primer afterwards. IMO weld through porimer is only good for spot welding... Gas welding will only burn it and make it harder for the primer to settle between the panels...

Sorry got to disagree with you here having something behind is better than nothing. The Zinc rich primer is very good and takes a fair amount of abuse.

If you were to use oxy acetylene then yes the amount of heat generated will destroy anything you put on. Mig welding although generating heat is more localised and does not damage any coating as much.

You only have to look at a joint that's not been painted with anything prior to welding to see the potential for rust, the later Mini's suffer from that issue hence the reason why they rust quicker than the older cars./

i agree with sonikk, ive been using weld thru primer religiously and very little burns off if your careful and it just provides that little extra protection against rust and ive had no problems with putting primers on after to stop rust >_< but yeh, you can weld on kurust but i always put some weld thru primer on it anyway :(

My Upol weld thru primer is about to run out....but I've got some Bilthamber Electrox Zinc primer on order.

  • As I'm plug welding, not spot welding, can I use the Electrox instead of the Upol before welding? (I've learnt to clean the Upol away from the plug hole before welding otherwise it just spatters for the first half second)
  • I want to coat the inside of the sills with this Electrox stuff as its highly rated. The Heritage outer panel has the black shiny e coat on it. Is it Ok just to key the black coating and brush the primer on top of it?

Thanks,

Adam

to be honest, im not sure what everyone does normally but before i weld on my sill im coating the inside with plenty of weld thru zinc primer and then im painting some red oxide on top of it for a little extra protection :) then when everything is welded lots of waxoil flushed through it ;)

hope that helps :)
