Riley Elk Mk2
1965

Does anyone know if there are supposed to be rubber bump stops fitted to the rear radius arm?
I'm a bit of a newbie, so please excuse my newbieness if this is a daft question, the arms just look as if they should have
something fitted in case of overloading/severe bump.

Many thanks,

yes they do, you have the remains of one showing in the picture.
to the left of the drum in the picture there is a plate bolted onto the radius arm, this is the base of the bump stop, the rubber is missing.
there is a couple of types you can buy to replace them, a standard one and a uprated one.

mini spares part numbers are, uprated =c-ajj3313
standard=21a1520.
there is a different standard one with a round type with a hole in the middle but they all do the same job.
i believe only hydrolastic suspension was fitted with bump stops but some people have fitted dry with bump stops, but in my opinion they dont serve a purpose on dry.

Thanks for your help Midridge2! Have ordered 21a1520 x2 bolts and washers. Incidentally, the other radius arm doesn't even have the remains of the bump stop just a couple of holes!

Hi
The export and some cooper S useD a 3/4 spacer with the standard 21 A 1520,

If you use the bump stop kit, make sure the body work is sound.

You also need to check why the tyre is rubbing on the arm, maybe fit a spaced drum, with longer studs
Originally the car was fitted with cross ply, I expect you are using radial which flex allowing the tyre to rub.

Thanks mini 4o. I had just changed the rear tyres for Falken 165/70 r10 (the same size as the old ones but a different make) and they rubbed the radius arm - I guess the old ones didn't flex as much as the Falkens.

I've therefore added 5mm spacers and longer studs on the hubs - nothing seems to rub and there isn't the smell of rubber as you drive along! Only drove it less than 10 miles whilst rubbing and took the tyre back - garage said no real damage done.
Will have to check the body work - hopefully it's OK.
